when i try to connect to xbox live i always get a DNS error and im using a ethernet cable to hook up my xbox to my router and my router is connected to my cpu by the same thing. im also connected to my dad's DSL internet connection by a wireless pci adapter card that is installed in my cpu. the xbox cable is plugged to the second cpu slot on the router and my CPU cable is plugged to the first cpu slot on the router, i have nothing plugged into the internet slot on the router because i will lose my internet connection or the xbox wont get through the second step of the troubleshooting method.
the router is a wireless-G broadband linksys router(model:WRT54G) wireless-G pci adapter (model:WMP54G) |

Please elaborate on exactly how *everything* is connected - what you *should* be doing is using the router as the master connection device - the DSL modem needs to be connected to the Internet jack on the router, and all devices need to be running directly off the router - either wired or wireless.

Xbox live has connected once but it was for a second or two

You should not be using 2 routers.
Instead of a router in your room, you need a wireless access point (such as a WAP54G) set to run as a wireless bridge (off your dad's wireless router) and a switch. Your access point, computer, and X-box should be connected to the switch with Ethernet. |

Partially. The WAP54G needs to be connected to a switch, it only has one Ethernet output and as a bridge, you cannot use it as an access point, it's either/or. 4 port switches are dirt cheap.

Switches are better than hubs, but same concept.

I am also getting the same error message. I have tried all the "solutions" on the X Box web site. However, I only have 1 router, my CPU is in port 1 X box in port 2 and the modem ethernet cable is in the internet port. But no matter what I do, I can't get past DNS Server. I have tried entering the MAC address, but that won't allow the dashes, and set IP to Manual and entered that. Still no luck.

If DHCP is enabled in the router, you can use the router's IP address as the DNS address in the Xbox setup. Otherwise, you need to use the actual DNS as assigned by the ISP - you can get this from the router's status page (WAN settings).

You cannot use a hub to share a single IP address from a cable modem, you need a router.

I'm trying to connect to Live on an Xbox 360 but it's not working. I think my router may be the problem, it is a wireless router built into my computer and it is wirelessly connected to my dad's computer which connects to the internet by a modem (I think it is called a wireless adapter). I have tryed to connect my ethernet cable from my 360 to my ethernet port in my computer but it still dosent work.....................HELP ME!!!!
