What do you think?

Hey guys,

Just did another internet connection speed test through IE6 at http://www.toast.net/performance and am connected via a CAT5 Ethernet cable through a DSL router/modem combo. I tested on the closest host in my area 3 times to get a decently accurate set of results and the results go as follows:-

Image (414k) 1st go, my speed = 467k
2nd go, my speed = 468k
3rd go, my speed = 466k

Large image (1000k) 1st go, my speed = 471*k
2nd go, my speed = 472*k
3rd go, my speed = 471*k

Text (340k document) 1st go, my speed = 1768k
2nd go, my speed = 1768k
3rd go, my speed = 1803k

Image and text (754k) 1st go, my speed = 710k
2nd go, my speed = 710k
3rd go, my speed = 710k

What do you guys think? Are these good, bad, average speeds?

TIA...

The larger the download will probably be the most accurate. The reason is a simple as the law of averages.

mbossman2, I'm not too sure. I know that the certified speed of a CAT5 Ethernet cable is 256k to 1500k, is that what you're asking? If so, then my speeds are pretty good, right?

Ummm, noooo......try at least 100000k. Your limiting factor is your DSL speed cap set by your provider.

Oops! My mistake. I read that speed range off of one of a few connection methods like DSL, Cable, ISDN and such like. My bad

Eh? I didn't know that they actually did that. I knew speed caps existed but I didn't know that ISP's actually reduced your speed. Why do they do that?

EDIT: Aaah, I think I may have worked it out. I just remembered that the speed range 256k-1500k that I stated earlier in this thread is the speed at which typical DSL works at. So even though Ethernet CAT cables work at really high speeds, the speed cap is there to limit the true speed of the Ethernet CAT cable to the actual speed of a typical DSL connection. Is that right?
