You can buy Cat5 cable by the foot at places like Home Depot and maybe radio shack. Then you can buy connectors and terminate the ends yourself. They might even do it for you at the store but it would depend on where you bought it.

I needed a 120 foot one once to run from my router to a PC in my daughters once. I didn't have the tools to make my own so I went to my local PC store and they made me one for 12 cents a foot off of a large spool plus $1 for two ends. All said and done it was a pretty good deal.

I picked up a spool of 1000 ft of CAT5E and about 500 connectors for $200. I couldn't believe the price I got, but I had to use it for a job. I am now an expert at building ethernet cables. It's a lot easier than most people think, but if you can find a place to make it for you for cheap, do that, since most people don't need to buy the tools and make their own cables that frequently.

Don't want to rain on anybody's parade, but you need to be aware of some things:
1) CAT5 cable for wiring panel to panel is solid wire and subject to breaking if it is flexed very much. 2) CAT5 patch cable is braided wire and is fine for patch applications but may be inappropriate for long runs because it takes more signal to get through it. 3) There is a difference in the RJ45 connectors used for solid and braided wire. 4) None of the above may affect you. But if you end up with problems you will have a starting point for resolution. I would go with the solid between wall jacks and use short patch cables from the wall jacks to the NIC. |
