Sharing Files With XP and 98SE?
I had a network with 2 XP computers and a 98SE. I formated the 98 and reinstalled Windows. I installed a new router, but it was by the same company, SMC. I enabled file sharing on the 98 and it can see itself and the folders shared, but it can only see the names of the XP computers. It can get to one, but it comes up blank, and I get an error with the other one.
I went to those computers to see what was going on, and neither one can find anything, not even themselves. Is there something I need to do with XP to enable file sharing? |

In Windows XP, you need:
1) enable the Guest account 2) in control panel, administration, local security settings, assign user rights, remove Guest from "deny access from the network to this computer" 3) configure the firewall so that it doesn't block the local network 4) share the folder. 5) If necessary, add Guest to the access settings of that shared folder. Now it should work. RJ

I enabled the guest, but that didn't help. There is no local security settings on one XP computer. That one can now see itself and me. The other XP computer still can't see anything. I enabled the guest, the local security already had the allow guests enabled, and the firewall is disabled. My 98 computer can still only see itself. It brings up the names of the other two, but one comes up empty and the other gets an error.
