using a WiFi AP for connecting a lan to a wireless router?

hi

my parents have a wireless router on the lower flor, could i use an AP to connect to it from my pc on my room. wifi pci-nics are expecnive and the AP could serve multiple purposes depending on where i am

(normal AP at my place, and the function i just desribed when i am staying at my parents place)

generally no. AP's (and the AP's built into wireless routers) are designed to accept signals and connections from client cards. This prevents inadvertant AP to AP connections in a network with multiple AP's (this would cause an infinite loop scenario that spanning tree would cut off and disable 1 of the offending AP's).

You are better off with a wireless NIC, even though it may cost you more money.

The Linksys WAP11 and WAP54G can be used as a bridge - which is what you are trying to do. However, it cannot be used as both a bridge and an AP at the same time, it's either/or. As a bridge, it can be plugged into a hub or switch and used to connect the 2 network segments together wirelessly.
