Exclamation Can't communicate

Hey, I have 2 computers (1 Athlon and 1 K6-2) hooked up together in a network using peer-to-peer. (I don't know whether router IS required here...)
My 1st computer's network card is built-in, and the 2nd computer (K6-2) has a Realtek network card. I connected them together using the cable and I can't see anything on the Network Neighbourhoods sections. And the worst thing is, the card in the 2nd computer keeps saying that the cable is not plugged in. And also the 1st one as well. Is there something wrong with the cable, or should I use a router or else? How to make them to communicate and recognize together? Please help. Thank u.

Welcome to PCMech!

What type of cable are you using? A cross-over cable or a standard CAT5 Ethernet cable? I personally find it best to use a router between two or more computers to allow mulitple connections at any given time.

When you say it is built-in, do you mean that it is onboard, meaning that the motherboard has onboard LAN?

to connect 2 computers together using only nic cards (no router) you need to use a cross over cable. a cross over cable has the two ends pinned differently allowing the computers to communicate. you can purchase a cross over at most any computer store.

Oh...

That's the crossover cable, and they've tested it, but when I plugged it into the computers, both of them said No Connection. From my 1st computer, it seems that the computer keeps saying Cable is Unplugged when I have plugged the cable into the socket. Damn! How to make the 1st computer to become server, and the 2nd is client, and should I need to fiddle with the network settings to make them to detect together? The WIndows XP should detect the network actually, but it is not...

If they both say No Connection, then it's not a proper crossover cable.

Connection blues...

I brought it to the shop yesterday, and they tested it. It worked fine, and maybe the cable's not good for my computers. What are the attributes of a crossover cable? Seen in a magazine that they need to see the colour of the wires in the cable. Please advise.
