I tried disabling DHCP server on my Linksys WRT54G (4 port + wireless) router and I had to restore the factory defaults because it would not respond. I'm going over Statica's guide for router tweaks and I'm wondering how to disable DHCP successfully. After DHCP is disabled, how does it know to let any computer onto the LAN? I don't see any options for specifying which computers to let on, it's just DHCP on or off. There's also a drop-down menu at the top of the basic setup page, which lets you choose auto-DHCP, static IP, PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, or Telstra Cable. I'm not sure if this is what I need to change or not, but could someone point me in the right direction?

No, that DHCP, etc. on the basic setup page is for the WAN side, and may be required to connect to your ISP.
When you disable the DHCP server, you have to assign static IP's to all the computers to connect. |

Thanks for the reply, GLC.
So, should I leave the basic setup as automatic configuration-DHCP? When I leave it there and then disable the DHCP server (another option below) nothing works. I cannot see any place on the page allowing me to assign IP's to certain PC's (How is this done anyway--MAC addresses?) Does this router not let you do this? |

Once you've disabled DHCP in your router, go to Control Panel > Network Connections > right click on your NIC > Properties > Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) > Properties > Use the following IP addresses. Assign a private IP, 192.168.0.*, Subnet Mask shoud fill in automatically, and Default Gateway will be your router IP, ie 192.168.0.1

No, a Linksys is 192.168.1.1 unless you change it, so all IP's have to be in the 192.168.1.x subnet. You will also need to enter your ISP's actual DNS servers, these can be found on the router's Status page. As said, this is done on each client, not in the router.
