Parallel (hard cable) connection

So, I try to connect two computers, standing about 5-feet apart, both running Windows XP Home, and going thru the Control Panel Network Connections thingy. Just like it says to, I hook a [25-pin] parallel cable from box to box, set one computer up as 'Host', and the other as, oh whatever it was, 'Un-Host', doesn't really matter. Went thru the setup wizards on each computer, each time describing the connector as LPT1. But...of course it didn't work. The particular excuse I got was Error 691, something having to do with an unacceptable UserName/Password, even though mere moments before I had just created those self-same codes. Can't find anything on the internet newer than 5 years old that describes this desired connection, let alone any hints at what Error 691 is.

Any thoughts?

You already knew this, but:

691->Access denied because username and/or password is invalid on the domain.

Have you tried the admin id/password on each machine?

Um...Huh?

I'm not sure I follow you. What I do know is that neither machine was set up with an administrator password. Submitting a username/password dedicated to the parallel umbilical cord seemed to be a straightforward process to me. When the appropriated dialog box came up, I filled in the first thing that came to mind. I think it was Britney Spears/Whoa! (no, just kidding). Anyhoo, do you mean to attempt an administrator password within the dialog box that I have just described? or do you mean that I must be certain I have administrator privileges on each machine? (which I do. Ain't no one else here.)

Thanks for getting back, by the way.
