I recently started having suddenly insane ping fluxing and drop off issues with my 2-Wire Bellsouth DSL modem. I scanned for adware, trojans, viruses and the like and non was showing up even with multiple types of scanners/hardware. Checked my Sync which was fine too and did several other minor tweaks like unplugging phonelines and other things trying to determine the cause of the problem. Still insane drop off issues and ping fluxing...
Getting rather fed up I got a Bellsouth DSL repair guy to come out and he fixed a wiring issue and ran a few tests to show my ping was normal again. After he left my ping immediately went to total garbage. High 200s to 800s. Fluxing very hard between them. I got him to come back and he was totally baffled as it wouldn't work itself out no matter what he tried. He finally replaced my 2-wire modem with a new Wireless D-Link one and gave me a DWL-PCI Wireless card to go with it free of charge. I was happy since it is supposed to be more stable and faster too... WRONG. Drop off issues stopped but the fluxing ping is even WORSE now! 400-1000 is the normal now. I've done a destructive wipe via F: disk, got a brand new Wireless modem so it's not even connected to wires now, and my ping is still fluxing like mad. What gives!?

Seems to me like the problem resides with Bellsouth's network. Wireless just means your internal network (between the modem and your pc) doesn't use any wires, but the fault is more likely either with your phone cable (in your house) or with the Bellsouth network itself. Looks to me like you just got a nice gift so the repair man could escape something he couldn't fix. Still, you got a gift out of it. You should test with a completely different pc to rule out your pc, then you can get on the horn to Bellsouth to bother them until they send someone who can fix it. Trust me, they do have more knowledgeable people than mr Santa-"Here's a nice wireless modem now please shut up"-Claus
![]() Another thing that could fix it is to replace the filter on the phoneline, it should be relatively inexpensive (try to get Bellsouth to do it if it costs a lot) and a bad filter is one of the things that can cause excessive pings. In conclusion, my money is on Bellsouth, so keep bugging them. Last edited by Mesaeus; 10-07-2004 at 05:57 PM. |
