Hello,
My PC is freshly formatted and I install all in once ; Xp, Norton Antivirus (NAV) 2004 updated and SP2 + a lot of spyware protection. When I boot my PC, the NAV Icon takes about 1 minute to load in my taskbar and to be Auto-Protect activated. I just found out that when I boot with my network cable unplugged, then I takes only 5 second to NAV to startup and being activated. If I plug in the network cable and reboot, then it takes 1 min again from the time when the Start button appear. It seems obvious that is because NAV must scan something on my connection setting. I suspect SP2 to cause trouble because since I installed SP2, there is also the Local Area Connection Icon that bothers me, saying that the connection has limited or no connectivity (but since Internet is working, I ignore this and removed it from taskbar by unchecking option in properties). What can I do XodbluX Note : In my msconfig startup, I have only ccApp ( from NAV ) and SpywareGuard Network : My only one network card is connected to the DSL modem which is connected to Internet. No router, no firewall but the one from SP2. |

Well, just by writing my question, I got the idea that it could be the problem "Limited or no connection" that is the problem. I had investigated on that problem before, but ignored it until NAV gives me troubles. So that was really the source.
So here is where I found how to fix the "Limited or no connection" problem http://www.talkaboutsoftware.com/gro...es/189134.html It's simple, in connection option, simply uncheck the boxes : - Client for Microsoft Networks - File and printer sharing for MS - Internet Protocol. My last question is : Is it correct to uncheck those items ??? I guess these items are only needed when in local home network ... Well, thx for reading me |

Do you have an unused network card (present, but not used) ? The link you provided was for people with an unused network card, since SP2 complains about it not having a connection. You can uncheck all those items, but the quickest way is to just right click on that network card icon in "Network Connections" and disable it.

I have only one Network card and my DSL modem is connected on.
In my Network connection panel, I have two icons : - Local Area Connection - My ISP connection If I disable the Local Area Connection, then I cannot connect on internet anymore. |

right click my network places--->properties-->right click Local Area Network-->select TCP/IP-->properties--->select use the following IP: 192.168.0.2 subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 then click ok, ok to exit reboot, should be faster now...

I'm confused as to why you would have two connections. I show only Local Area Network and access the internet from that. Perhaps that's the way your ISP has to be set up, but it could also be causing your problem. Try to disable the MY ISP connection and operate with the LAN connection only.

That's true about PPPoE. With DSL, I use my ISP connection to connect to Internet, unlike cable that is always connected.
For the IP to 192.168.0.2 , that means that my PC is considered to be on a mini LAN consisting of my PC and the modem ? So my modem should be 192.168.0.1 by default then. I'm gonna try this at home tonight... So, does that mean that I should put back the 3 items previously unchecked ? |

If you are using PPPoE DSL with the builtin XP client, you don't even have to have TCP/IP enabled on the local area connection. Just uncheck the box, all it needs is PPP over Ethernet Protocol. TCP/IP is handled by the "My ISP Connection".
