router /direct Lan connect troubles..
Ok, Toshiba Portege 7200 CTe, Win98se, ... i had a working connection to my LAN at IU, i then wanted to connect through my roomie's router, so I could network with my Xbox and play over XBconnect. That worked, but it was laggy, so i disconnected, jacked back into my wall jack, and now i can't connect. whenever i try to open an internet page, i get the "page cannot be displayed" yada yada yada, check your connection and settings. So i've been playing around with my settings, but i get nothing. so now i'm stuck. the strange part is, i KNOW i have a connection b/c my ethernet jack on my laptop's dock has been glowing green and flashing yellow since i plugged back in, just like it always does when i have a connection. so after about 2 hours of frustration, i leave this to the gods at PCmech

also, if i run ipconfig/all my IP returns as 0.0.0.0 with dhcp enabled. Last edited by damontgo; 10-10-2004 at 10:11 PM. |

ok i ran the ipconfig/release_all anyways, it returned this:
0 Ethernet adapter : IP Addy: ...............:0.0.0.0 Subnet Mask:.........:0.0.0.0 Default Gateway:....: It also returns "1 Ethernet adapter" and "2 Ethernet adapter" with the same values as the "0 Ethernet adapter" then i ran ipconfig/renew_all and returns saame things for Ethernet 0 and 1 but for 2 it returns... IP: 149.159.45.36 Subnet: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 149.159.45.254 the IP and Gateway IPs fall under the common IU IPs, so I think my DHCP is ok.... hope this helps |

Oops, ipconfig /release is for NT/2000/XP systems, glad to see you managed to find the format for Win98/Me by yourself
In any case, the dhcp seems good. You're still getting the problem ? Try going to Control Panel/internet Options, then choose the Connections tab. Tell me how many entries you see under the dialup window (top) and how they're called. You should then click on the LAN settings button at the bottom, just click ok and test again. Sometimes just going into this "LAN Settings" dialog will make Windows correctly use LAN again.
