problems sharing behind router

alright, i am going to college in the cincinnati area, and have recently started doing computer work down here. working on a network today of three computers, all running windows xp pro. we are using Cincinnati Bell's Zoomtown ADSL service, with a Westell LiteLine 6110 modem. behind this modem, we have a D-Link 707P router. all of the computers have internet access using DHCP. all of the computers can ping the router, none of the computers can ping each other, and the router can't ping any of the computers. the modem is giving a private ip (its a 10.xxx.xxx.xxx ip address) to the router, which the router is then doling out ip's to the computers. because none of these computers can see each other, we can't network them together, which was the original goal.

after talking with d-link's support, i found that there was a tad bit of a quirk between westell modem's and dlink routers. one of these quirks involves the fact that the router has a private ip which it is then trying to dole out. he told me that this router has two modes: bridge mode and one other that i can't remember but it was something/router mode. i can't remember what the something was, forgive me. he told me that all i had to do was call Cincinnati Bell and ask them to put the modem in bridge mode. this would allow the WAN ip to be sent straight to the router and would fix all of our problems. Cincinnati Bell was no help to me, and they will not change the mode. does anyone have any advice on what i can do? thanks a lot

Shut down all computers. Pull the D-Link and replace it with a standard switch. Fire up one computer at a time and see if all 3 can pull its own 10.x.x.x IP.

alright, tried that, no go. they all got ip's in different subnets, and the first one the get an ip was the only one that had access to the internet. to rule out a problem with the router, i brought in a linksys that i had, and it didn't work either. so i am at my wit's end right now. i thought that what i could do is put another nic in each comp and give each a static ip and run the network off of that

hmm...although your problem seems to be a little more complex than mine was, i wonder if it would work.

basically i was having the same problem, where my network of 3 computers could all share teh internet, but was having trouble seeing each others computers in network places and such.

what i did was to set up a network under windows xp and instead of putting "this computer connects through the internet from another computer, etc" i checked the "this computer is not connected to teh internet". i was then able to see the other computers, and we were able to share files.

yup, i was suprised that it worked actually..but i havent had any problems since.

see..our internet network was set up using the netgear software that came with the router, and then our offline computer network is set up using the windows setup wizard.
