I have two computers running xp. Both were connected through a router with DSL. One computer just stopped connecting to the internet - cannot find server. Cannot access the router screen either on that computer. The other computer is up and running.
I even bought a new router thinking the old one was going bad (it is about 5 years old). Network connection says Lan Area Connection is connected and so is the 1394 Connection. I have settings to automatically detect IP address. Any suggestions of what else I can check? |

can the two computers see each other ?
the one that is not seeing the router, may have a bad nic. try pinging 127.0.0.1 and see if the nic is working at all. |

Try right clicking on the local area connection and choose Repair.
Other things to check: Bad NIC Bad cable Bad router port (or need to reboot the router) Damaged Winsock stack - run this program (it fits on a floppy) - http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html |

Disable the 1394 connection, repair you LAN connection, see if that fixes the problem.
