Optical Fibre Link

Lets discuss about Optical Fibre Link since it is the most advance technology in Computer Networking. How is Optical Fibre Link used in Computer Networking?I mean how it is connected between networks?

Optical fiber is not really brand new. It has been around for quite some time. Fiber optics is just another form of transport media for data traffic. It does have quite a few advantages over copper cabling:

1) distance - copper cabling is limited to 100m or so whereas fiber cabling is capable of running distances in excess of 50km.
2) speed - optical cabling has, historically, always been available at 1 speed faster than copper cabling. Currently copper cable is available in 1000mbps (1gb), optical currently is capable of 10000mbps (10gb).
3) security - signals over copper cable can be read without breaking integrity of the cable (minute changes in the magnetic field) whereas optical is not.

The downsides of optical cable is cost and the expertise needed to install. Because of these 2 issues, optical cable is very rarely used to connect switches to the desktop devices (called the access layer). OC is usually used, in LAN/MAN scenario, for higher speed connections between switches, switch closets, floor to floor connections and same campus building to building connections. The latter 2 are because of the superior range of OC and the former 2 because of the higher speed capacity of OC to limit bottlenecks.

this about cover what you needed?

fiber optic is really a lot simpler to terminate than you would think.
we had a lesson on it in school and after running 2 connectors learning how to do it, its a peace of cake.
the hardest part for me was trimming the end off just before polishing it.
it kep breaking on me till I fiqured out just how littel amount of preasure was needed to score it.
