hey:
I'm still working on this problem, so don't give up on me yet, the computer that cannot see the internet is working fine on the lan, its just that it does not know how to connect to the internet through the router. I am thinking that when you ran through the internet connection wizard, that you set it up to connet to the internet through computer that does see the internet, instead of selecting that you connect to the internet through a LAN. and that would do what you got. so maybe going into the control panel on the problem computer and remove the cannection as it is , and run the wizard again but select that your on a LAN for the internet connection, this does confuse a lot of people, so redo that part and see what happens. |

Oh I'm not giving up, and you wouldn't understand how much I appreciate your help on this.
My main concern is being able to register WinXP. I still have like 22 days, so I'm hopin' that's enough time. And I need to mail this computer in the first week of December. Okay, now I think I tried this before, but I couldn't quite understand if anything happened. I go into the Network connections. I have two connections that appear: "Internet Gateway" and "LAN or High-Speed Internet". Internet Gateway says this under it: Inernet Connection Connected Internet Connection "LAN or High-Speed Internet" says this: Local Area Connection Connected, Firewalled NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller Now, when I go to delete the Internet Connection, it tells me to disable it first. Fine, I disable, then delete, but it tells me this connection cannot be deleted. So I disable the LAN connection (then the Internet Connection dissappers) and it doens't let me delete that item either. What do I need to do before I can delete one, and which one needs to be deleted? Oh, and when I diable the Internet connection on the one computer, it disables it on my computer, which freaked me out there for a second! |

If it won't let you delete it, try safe mode, if that doesn't work, try removing you NIC in the device manager, rebooting, (disable nic if it's on board, remove it if it isn't) boot into windows without the NIC, try to disable/delete it then if it's still there, reboot again, turn nic on and rerun the wizard.

Cool, sounds like a development!!! I'll give it a whirl and repost!
EDIT: Okay, I can't delete the darn connection! I disabled the connection, then tried deleting, no dice. I disabled the onboard LAN and then the connection (Internet Gateway) just disappeared. Then I tried deleting the Internet Connection (I figured delete that, then enable the LAN controller, then try deleting the Internet Gateway), but it wouldn't let me delete anything. I haven't tried in Safe Mode because I can't remember how to boot in Safe Mode! I seriously need to write some of these things down, too many things to remember at the same time! have you tried re-running the wizard and selecting connect to a hub (or however xp words it) it's under "other" on the first page of choices (residential gateway, direct connection, other)...

Cool, thanks redfallon, that got rid of the gateway connection, now there's just the LAN or HS Internet connection. Only problem is still no internet! Anything else I need to do or should check? I rebooted, thinking that would start the new settings, but nothing. I ran the connection wizard, but nothing.

Is there another way to delete the one remaining connection? It doesn't allow me to delete it, whether it's disabled or not. Should I try deleting it in safe mode? If so, I don't remember how to get into safe mode.

i dunno if this applies to your situation, but when i was having trouble with my router someone told me to do a DNS flush, and DNS restore or something like that?? It solved my prob, if anyone here knows more about DNS flush/etc. and wants to fill in the blanks for me that'd be great

No dice. It won't let me delete the connection in Safe Mode. I tried once without network capabilities, and the connection wasn't there. Rebooted in Safe Mode again with networking capability and it wouldn't let me delete the connection; same as in normal boot mode.
Is this normal? I'm getting the feeling that I should be able to delete this connection. Disabling doesn't change anything. Wierd, wierd, wierd! EDIT: I had someone at work tell me that I was having problems with this because the OEM version of WinXP Home I have has SP2 with it. Would this have anything to do with it??? When I disconnect the ethernet cable, the icon doesn't disappear, but I tells me that there is no connection and to check the cables.
In Safe Mode I wasn't able to enable the connection, although I had disabled it in Safe Mode. |

Nope, tried that both in Safe and normal boot modes, and still nothing.
Don't know if this means anything, but since I got rid of the Gateway connection on the problematic computer, now there's no Gateway connection icon on my computer. It hasn't affected anything, I just thought it was wierd because I wasn't expecting it. |

Ugh, sorry, that didn't do anything. That's what I did to get rid of the Gateway connection. I've got one connection that says "LAN or High Speed Connection" already.

Okay, all that did was make the "Internet Gateway" connection showup again on the second computer! What does that mean? Should I get rid of that connection? It also showed up again on my computer (the Internet Gateway).

yes we need to get rid of them again, when you do that will involve the rebooting of this one and the changes you made may take affect then.
first do you have a icon in the control panel or this page that say network set up wizard ? |
