ok. that don't seam to be hotmail, looks like yahoo.
anyway get rid of the gateway connection then run the networkset up wizard
and that this computer connect over the lan

you still have the firewall enabled on the one computer

on computer 1 I think you set it up wrong and it is acting as a gate way for the problem computer

the ip address are ok but you need to redo the network set up wizard on both computers ans use the same settings on both computers
select other when asked and then select this computer connect to the internet through a lan/hub, doing this should take care of the problem and get rid of the gateway connection.
other than that it is working good for you.

one other way you could do it is to turn all the computers off, and then set them up one at a time, so that they will connect to the internet by themselves-( all the other computers turned off)
do this for each computer.
they must be able to connect to the internet by them self.

Okat, I'm going to go ahead and try this. I'll repost in a sec.

EDIT: Okay, I don't know why, but now I can't get the Internet Gateway connection to be deleted from either computer. I've tried exactly what I did before to remove it, and now it won't

I think you're right about both computers needing to connect to the internet directly via the router, instead of one computer through the other to the internet. Is there anyway of completely removing all network components and starting over from the beginning?

Cool

Whew!

and Whew! again.

Have followed all the posts and wow, really a problem for you. Sorry. So, don't know if this will help or not.''

I recently hooked up ym router and tried following the directions on the enclosed CD and everything. Nothing seemed to work.

So here is what I did, shut down everything, computer, router everything.

Turned on modem which was connected to the Router, then after 5 minutes, turned on router, to which the modem and 3 computers were hooked up to. Then after another 5 minutes turned on computer #1 and after that hooked up to an internet connection all by itself, with out running any wizard. After running the browser on that computer, confirming a hookup to the internet I turned on computer #2 and that also found an internet connection without running a wizard. Turned on computer #3 and the same thing happened.

Now, know thats not exactly how they say to do it but worked for me. Recenty got another Router and now have 4 computers hooked to internet and didn't follow the instructions on the cd for either of them.

Anyway, know you are going thru h... with this thing and are frustrated beyond belief. This is the only thing I can offer for a suggestion.

All the computers have windows XP except one which has win 2000 pro and did not run wizard on any. All OS were updated with latest updates from Microsoft.

Boy, for your sake I sure hope this will work for you......GOOD LUCK

and best Regards.............................Sterling

Thanks for the suggestion Sataradi0, I'll have to try that later on today. I'm leaving in about ten minutes tfor San Diego to visit my dad, I'll be back later this evening.

When I remove the cables from the NICs, the Internet Gateway dissappears, then I pluge them back in and the connection reappears!! Can I unistall something that will force the connection to be permanently gone, the reinstall whatever I uninstalled and create the proper connection to the router?

yes, that is why I said to do them one at a time.
unplug the cables from all the comouters and have the computers turned off.
connect the cable from the router to one computer, turn on that one computer and set it up so it will connect to the internet ,
then turn it off and remove the cable to the router.

connect the cable to the next computer and turn it on, do the same thing
then unplug it and turn off the computer.
then do the same thing to the 3rd computer.

then turn off the modem and router,
turn on the modem when it gets the cable light, turn on the router.
wait a minut or two, then connect the cable to first computer then turn it on
varify that it will connect to the internet.
then connect the second computer and turn it on, varify that it will connect to the internet.
and last do the same to the 3rd computer,

last make sure that all 3 are on the same workgroup, ( a lot of mistakes are made here)
all should be working and all 3 computers should be on the internet at the same time now.

I know its a lot of trouble, but it works.

Man, at this point, nothing is too much trouble! I'll give it a try, and post back in a few minutes!

I'm starting to think something is really wrong somewhere. That didn't change anything. I turned off the computers, unplugged both ethernet cabels, plugged in one computer, turned it on and open Network Connections, there was already a "Internet Gateway" connection and "LAN or High Speed Internet" connection icons already. That happened on both computers, and it was also that way when I turned off the router and modem, plugged the modem in, then plugged the router and waited 2 minutes, then plugged and turned on each computer one at a time.

Is there some way to turn off this auto-detection? Actually, it seems like the connections are never gone. I can't delete them period, whether it's with them disabled or with the ethernet cables unplugged, they react the same way.

not sure I understand what your saying,
are you saying that each computer was able to connect to the internet with all the othercomputers turned off and the network cable removed ?
and that you ran the internet connection wizard wizard on each one that way ?

Sorry, I'm being a little unclear I guess. I followed the process you described above. I turned off both computers, hen unplugged the ethernet cables from both. I plugged in the ethernet on my computer, turned it on, and before I ran the connection wizard, it already had the "Internet Gateway" connection, along with the "LAN or High Speed Internet". Computer 1 (my computer) also had the internet, which is usual and the same as before.

Then I turned off my computer, plugged the ethernet into computer 2 (the non-internet seeing one), and once again, before I ran the wizard, there was already the "Internet Gatweay" and "LAN or High Speed Internet" connections there. Computer 2 did not see the internet, which is the same as before.

I got these same results when turned off both computers and turned off the router and modem.

Yup, that's exactly what I did. Now, in the window before the one that I select "other", I have two choices: use the connection already set up (recommended) or choose a different way. I always choose the second one (choose a different connection). I'm assuming this is right.

This thread is getting long - have you tried winsockxpfix yet? If not, Google it and download it - it will fit on a floppy.

Yes, much too long! I have tried winsockxpfix, and it didn't do anything. I have a good friend who's older brother is an IT for Kaiser Permante, and he's gonna come over later this week. From what I was telling him, he suggested everything that was already suggested here, and he said he'd come over and take a look. So I'll post back if I ever get this thing fixed!

Thanks for all the help to everyone! Even though we didn't get it fixed, I still learned a lot and you guys never gave up on me! Thank you!

WOOHOO!!! I GOT IT TO WORK!!!!!! Well, I reinstalled WinXP Home, but I used a version that didn't have SP2, just SP1. I don't know if this made the difference, but when I finished my reinstall and installed all the drivers, then BAM!! I had the interent immediately, and just changed the work group so that I can see the whole network. It was very simple. That's how easy it was supposed to be.

Once again, thanks for all the help that everyone lended me. I learned a lot about networking, now I'm sure I can troubleshoot most problems. Thanks again!!!

SP2 is a love/hate thing - it either works great or it totally trashes things out.
