dsl modem and router problems
BEFSR41 & Speedstream 5100 dsl modem problem
Where I work part-time they have a network using Linksys BEFSR41 router and Yahoo Bell Speedstream modem. Randomly, the router quits seeing the modem. You can plug the modem into the back of the main computer and it works fine. And then if you reset the ip numbers using the linksys site the router will start seeing the modem again and everything will be fine for awhile..........then it happens again. Or the dsl modem looses it's settings, name and password and won't connect. They've had tech support try to fix it, it will work for a while, then back to square one. Are trying to get a new dsl modem from SBC Yahoo, but don't know if that will fix the problem or not. Any ideas what could be done to fix this? Thanks. |

If it's one of the brand new 5100's make sure you have it in bridge mode.
bailey, are you sure you aren't thinking of the BEFW11S4? |

Thank you for the replys. Could you explain bridge mode, is that the same as pppoe? Do you put the router or the modem in bridge mode? Or both. What is the advantage. I've tried to educate myself on this stuff by reading up on it, but....I'm still in the dark.

The new 5100's have 3 modes - bridge, pppoe, and router. Bridge is basically a straight passthrough, pppoe allows you to store the login, and router acts as a router. To work properly with your own router, you need the modem in bridge mode and store the login in the router, set the router to pppoe.
