I have Internet with both computers through my router but don`t know to see if I can share files between the 2. Is there a networking for dummies site to refer to LOL? Thanks

I hope you can understand this. The xp computer is my new one and the 98se is the older one. I can use both to surf the net but can`t get anything off of the older computer. I get a host server error from the new one.

If your XP comp is formatted in NTFS then you cant get the 98se comp to read any files from the xp comp because 98se only supports fat and fat32. the xp comp should read the 98se files though. try sharing the hard drive in the drive properties. (i havent used 98se in a while so i cant really tell you where that is)

the problem on the win98 computer and the xp computer is the dns server is wrong.
it should be the ip address of your isp dns server |

when the configuration is set up correctly, the dns ip address is listed automatically, it should be almost the same as the ip address of the isp provider.
I'm just not sure how to tell you what to do it looks like your w98 system is useing the xp system as a host, instead of the router |

Your configurations are fine. The router is providing DNS transfer, the IP's are correct. Now all you have to do is set up file and print sharing properly, let's start barking up the right tree.
1. Both computers must be in the same workgroup. 2. Both computers must have different names. 3. File and print sharing for MS Networks must be enabled on both computers. 4. On the 98 box, primary login must be Client for MS Networks, and you must log in. You do not have to set a password unless you want to. 5. In order to access the 98 box from the XP box, the XP firewall must be disabled and something must be shared on the 98 box - and the 98 box must not have a firewall installed. |

4. Right click on Network Neighborhood, properties. Primary logon is selectable in a spin box, select Client for MS Networks, not MS Family Logon or Windows Logon. When you boot the machine, it will come up to a logon screen, you must log in.
5. On XP, look in your network connections. If any of them say "firewalled" this must be turned off. Both boxes must not have any firewall installed such as Zone Alarm, Sygate, Kerio, Norton Internet Security. Anything you want to share (drive, folder, printer) you right click on it, Sharing - and share it. To access the 98 box from XP, go into My Network Places, Computers Near Me - and it should be there. |

if you mean just studying for it, yes, but also study for the network + also.
I just was not familiar with your router, its set up differant than the ones I use. heck, you will learn alot here at pcmech just by reading through all the threads, youll see all kinds of problems and learn how to narrow it down to what is bad, and the salution to correct it, and what not to do also. I have been on here almost every day sence I joined and have learned a lot. sometimes I stick my nose in where I shouldn't and get stuck, but good ole GLC always has came along a bailed me out. LOL I got my certs this past year, and still have a lot to learn. |
