i have a cable modem and a linksys wireless 802.11b router properly connected to a windows xp pro machine in one room. the modem is connected to the wireless router. this computer isn't running wireless - i have a cable running from the wireless router to the computer. it works fine. here's the problem: there is another computer in a different room running windows 98 SE. i have a linksys wireless usb adapter (802.11b) connected to that computer. i installed the software before i installed the hardware (as the instructions said). upon installation of the software, i chose an ad-hoc network, seeing that we're not running a wireless access point (WAP). i then installed the hardware to the 98SE machine. rebooted and it doesn't seem to be working with the wireless router. i made sure that the SSID, the channel number, etc. matched the wireless router in the other room. i don't know why it's not working! i'm thinking of just installing windows 2000 pro. on the 98SE machine to see if the adapter will work better. any ideas??? thanks

yes, you do not want to use the ad-hoc type of connection because that id for connecting two computers directly wireless, the wireless router is the acess point you want to use. change to that and it will work fine.

yea, that's the first thing i was going to do. since i'm at home and these computers aren't min, i've already called the friend who owns the computers to have them uninstall/reinstall the software. i'll let you know how it turns out. i still might install 2kpro on the 98se just because of the simple fact that 98 is terrible. heh.

I don't think you need to uninstall anything, just change the connectivity settings

One thing I noticed with a 98se/xp dual boot machine with a linksys G card, Bluetooth connectivity had to be disabled to get the card to work. It's under advanced properties for the card (if I remember correctly). Bailey is correct, you should be able to change the settings to get it back to a normal network connection. If not uninstalling/reinstalling the network connection with a reboot in between should fix the problem

Open the Linksys wireless utility on the 98 machine and change it from ad-hoc to infrastructure. Assign it a static IP for most reliable connection, I suggest 192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0, default gateway 192.168.1.1, and actual DNS servers (obtained from the WAN status page in the router admin). Win98 has problems getting an IP address from wireless, the DHCP search times out on bootup before the adapter can associate unless you hardcode the SSID, channel, MAC, and WEP key in Windows adapter advanced properties (NOT the Linksys utility).
