why do I need TCP/IP protocol for a peer to peer network of 6 win9x / win2000 PRO pcs link together with a hub engaging in a workgroup ,since the NetBEUI protocol are known to be sufficient ? Did I overkill ? Or is it they need the to hv the IP addresses resolved by the TCP/IP inorder to work. This difference is what I can see.

If you are not sharing an internet connection, then you dont need tcp/ip for the setup you have. Netbeui was designed for the peer to peer network setup that you have.
The win2000 machines would work just fine without tcp/ip installed. you could use tcp/ip on the win2000 boxes if you had a wins server running on an nt server or if you had a win2000 server which uses dns to resolve ip addresses. I would say having tcp/ip installed is overkill, it isn't going to conflict with your current setup

NetBEUI is fine for peer to peer, but NetBEUI can't be routed, hence it can't be used for internet applications.
