connection problem
OK, here goes:
Background: On Nov. 11, boutght all Linksys. WRT54G router, WMP54G for desktop running Win 98SE, WPC54G ver.1 for laptop running Win 98 SE. The router is connected to another desktop locally with an ethernet connection. Even paid Comp USA to install this thing. All worked OK but was informed by tech who set it up that the drivers were quite old on the WPC54G ver. 1 notebook adapter. Here is where i made my mistake. I looked and indeed the driver was from 2-1/2 years ago. So, I uninstalled from control panel, Add/Remove programs. I then returned to Comp USA and indeed they had no more of these version 1 cards. I exchanged for a version 2 card with latest utility and drivers. I could not get this thing installed. Everything appeared to install OK but I got 2 error messages on bootup to desktop. This is detailed in a contact to Linksys e-mail customer support sa follows: Product: WPC54G-Wireless-G Notebook Adapter version 2 ISP: Comcast OS: WIN 98 SE Internet Connection: CABLE Problem Type: Initial Configuration Additional Products Related to Problem: The Question: Reference case No. 4416162. Sequence of events. 1. Bought a WPC54G ver1 Notebook Adapter Nov. 11. 2. Installed by tech. Nov. 13. 3. Tech said driver was old and to check Linksys website for update. 4. When I realized I had really bought an out of date product, I returned to Comp USA and got the ver. 2 card. 5. Software apparently installed fine . However, on booting to desktop with card installed , I get error message: ODHOST co create instance failed. Click OK and get 2nd error message: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime error: Program.....Ram FilesLinksysWireless-G Notebook AdapterODHOST.exe Apparently, this ODHOST is the problem. Maybe the co-create is from the installation of the version 1 adapter. I don't know!!! I have called the India support telephone many times. Need to try something different than uninstall and reinstall. That does not work. When I get transferred to higher level of support and get put on hold to research, the phone connection ultimately gets lost. I have wasted hours on this and need some fresh input and instructions. HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!! This was ultimately fixed on a reply asas follows: Make sure that the old utility or driver is already uninstalled. Install the odyssey.exe file on the setup CD and then restart the computer. Download the driver posted in our website (www.linksys.com/download). The Odyssey client and current software from funk.com solved that problem. Sorry for the length, but everyone says to be detailed. Now the problem: It appears that there is a momentatrry comnnection to the internet and then drops. I had Comp USA out here again and they said the network is setup correct and the fault is Windows 98 SE. A senior phone tech at Linksys said the same thing that it will not work with Windows 98 SE. I wonder why it says on the box "compatible with Windows 98 SE". It appears from a previous thread that the DHCP is timing out before the IP can be picked up. I have the IP statically configured and the winipcfg seems to appear OK. Like I said, the DNS config, the IP address and the Gateway are all configured manually on the notebook. Other computers run fine. I have no firewalls on this computer and I am trying to set up with no security protocols just to get it working and can't get it! In another suggestion from Linksys e-mail customer support they suggested the following: Go to control panel, network connections or networks.Go to the properties of the wireless connection then click configure, go to advanced and look for RTS threshold and Fragmentation threshold, make them 2304. Save it, refresh your connection and try it. If it still doesn't work go back there and set RTS to 1024 and set Fragmentation to 768. I have done this and didn't work. Back to original settings now. Technical support has no other ideas and I am still lost !!!!!!! I have done the ping to 127.00.1 and it comes back fine. 4 sent, 4 received, and 0 lost. Cannot ping 192.168.1.1 successfully. How do I get communication to that router? Sorry for the length and the bother. |

Why did you get rid of the version 1 adapter if it was working properly? Who cares how old the driver is? It was still a lot newer than your operating system. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'd take the ver.2 back to the store and get the ver.1 back. |

You are absolutely correct. Absolute stupidity on my part. I tried to go back the next day and get the old one back. They told me it was gone. I acknowledge that it was absolutely stupid!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are correct! A valuable lesson learned. If it ain't broke don't fix it!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope everybody takes that advice!!!!!!!!!

Try this driver:
ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pub/network/wp...lity_v2.02.zip Utility version 2.02 - Resolves installation issue under Windows 98SE (explorer.exe corruption). |

fixed!!!!!!!
I want to thank you GLC for your help and interest. That is the driver that was on the CD that came with the WPC54G and the one I had installed.
This is for everyone that may have a similar problem. I read everything from Linksys about that card and had tried many things. I had powered down the router and modem on several occasions with no success. However, the only thing I did different was hit the reset buton on the back of the router and that seemed to have done it. Actual steps. 1. Shut off all computers. 2. Shut off surge protector power strip for modem and router. 3. Removed transformer plug from the surge protector for router. Left that way for 5 minutes. (Pressed reset buton with power off and power on). 4. Turned on surge protector power strip and let modem do its thing for about 30 seconds. 5. Plugged in router and after 10 seconds pressed reset button. 6. When all lights looked to be lighting normally, started all computers. 7. To my amazement everything worked perfectly. That reset button is not mentioned anywhere in Linksys support docs. If I were a tech rep, this reset button would be one of the first things I would mention. Bet this cures a multitude of problems. Its amazing that not one tech rep mentioned this or the person that installed the thing from Comp USA. I knew it had to be something simple and it took me many many hours over 10 days for something that easy. Live and learn. I sure hopes this helps someone else!!!!!!!!!! |
