How to set up internet connection sharing?
Hi guys, I've been reading on the net for a few hours now trying to find out how to get my two computer's to share my internet connection. I had no idea how to go about it and after reading various items I am unfortunately still very much in the dark.
One computer has WinXP Home SP1&2. The other has WinXP Pro SP1. I am using a DSE (Dick Smith Electronics) ADSL Ethernet Router. Currently the one computer connected to the internet is connected to the router via a cat-5 cable. I have tried running the network setup wizard then selecting the 'directly to the internet' and also 'via a hub' and 'gateway computer'. Deleting the connections in between, but no joy. I have the second computer plugged into the router also using a cat-5. I get the feeling it's probably something pretty easy, perhaps I need to set something with my router? |

this is my personal experience
both the computers should be connected to the router using your cat-5 "straight" cables going into the LAN ports. then another cat-5 cable is to go to your dsl modem via the WAN port. this is how my connection is setup with XP set your connections in the "set up home or small offce network wizard" on both computers to "this computer connects to the internet via a residential gateway" .the WORKGROUP does not have to be the same and it should work but if you ant to share files easier you sould name both the workgroups the same name(by default MSHOME) then configure your router using PPPOE so that your router dials for an internet connection and not your computers. hope this helps Last edited by rave; 12-05-2004 at 02:58 AM. |

I don't think I quite follow where you mention the dsl modem plugged into the WAN port.
My router has four cat-5 holes and one usb hole, plus the power hole and phone line hole. Both of the computers have an ethernet card, do I need to be using them? |

yes , your modem and router are in the same box, so that one comment would be disreguarded, all the rest is ok.
I have seen some problems doing this with sp2 installed. xp should detect the network and set it all up for you. just make sure that the workgroup is the same for all computers, then reboot the computers one at a time and xp should do the rest. |
