Is this a virus?
This morning my mom found her account put back to the starting point in windows xp. As in, when you make a new account, this is where my mom found hers. Except, there are ZORK1 icons on the top left corner. I used system restore and fixed the problem, except that now, my little sisters are typing a letter and cannot seem to type. The pointer flashes from an hourglass, to a question mark, to a standard pointer whenever you click inside the text area and you cannot type. What is this?
Thanks, MrHowdeedoo |

Virus sounds like a definate possibility. Conduct an Online virus scan and see what turns up. Make sure to post back with your results.

You definatley need to go to trend micro and run a scan. Also you should see if your remote access is turned off. Maybe someone got in there and reset your moms account. I've never seen a virus do that, but I have seen new accounts suddenly appear on my list of users. Go to the control panel and turn off Guest and delete anything you don't recognize.

It definitely sounds like a virus. Run the online virus scan and run AdAware and Spybot too.

I finished the housecall scan. It found nothing. I ran ad-aware and spybot and they didn't find anything either. I scanned with AVG, and it hasn't completely finished, but it's almost done and it hasn't found anything. Spy Sweeper found a couple traces and an ad toolbar, but I don't think that was it. We're not having any trouble any more, but the computer is running very slow. Any ideas?

Zork is a DOS text adventure. I downloaded it about a year ago, and uninstalled it after I finished. I don't know why it showed up again. Nothing unusual turned up in Add/Remove.

I would suggest, for a start, that you turn off System Restore and restart the computer.
This will dump all the restore points and get rid of any malware they may have that you can't otherwise reach or see. Given the new ways of stealthing the things the fact that they don't show up doesn't mean they aren't there. Once you've cleared Restore enable it again when the computer is working as it should. For Remote Access : Click Start>Control Panel>System>Remote. Uncheck remote assitance in enabled. This needn't be permanent, just re-enable it when you intend to use it and disable it otherwise. edit: What does task manager show running on your computer? |

I've restarted, dumped system restore, and unchecked remote access. Here's what I have running in the task manager (the list is so long that I scrolled down inbetween pictures):

Whoa!
I should have been more specific but, in truth, that doesn't look bad. When you click on programs what shows ? I'm looking for anomalies, programs and/or processes that shouldn't be there or that you don't remember seeing before. How's the computer running now? |

It's running how it usually does, but I'm just wondering it the timer is set the virus is going to blow soon.

That's not how virii usually act.
Go to Start>Run>msconfig.exe>and select diagnostic start up ( take note of what's checked before you make changes ). That will load only what XP needs to start when you reboot. How does the computer act ? If you're still having trouble it may be time for a repair install (which will save all your data). If everything works you can begin adding back other programs one at a time till you find the culprit. In that case you either nuke the problem or, more likely, reinstall it. |

Sorry, I had to remove all the inline images, they exceeded the rules limit.
Please read the sticky thread about HijackThis logs, do the prerequisites, and post a log. That's a much better way to analyze than screencaps of the tasklist. By the way - 84 running processes is VERY excessive. You need to do something major with your startups. I have 46 running here, and I have a lot of apps open. Make sure you read the thread - don't run HJT with all your stuff running, do it immediately after rebooting. Last edited by glc; 12-09-2004 at 04:35 AM. |

But when I log into my account, (i'm using windows XP) it takes an hour to load. I wouldn't be able to do a HJT log with everything loading up. How would I fix logging in so that it wouldn't take so long?

Check the task manager to see what you have running.

Go here www.nirsoft.net and download a tool called "myuninstaller", run this little application and it should give you a list of everything that is installed on your machine, you can then check the list against what you know should be installed, you will see from the display what does and does not come with an uninstaller and this app will help you get rid of what you don't want. It is a lot more powerfull than the standard windows add and remove application

20 minutes is still a long time. Is that from the moment you turn on the computer?

Just tested my computer twice, it takes 52 seconds before it sings the log on song, and 88 seconds before it is completely done. It looks finished after 60, but for some reason Zone Alarm takes awhile longer to show up in the system tray.
You may have a bunch of programs running in the background that you don't know of, or forgot about. Go through the steps that pam mentioned earlier and that should help quite a bit. Start>Run>msconfig.exe>and select diagnostic start up I use Selective Startup myself, but I wouldn't recommend using that until you someone sees what your current settings are. |

I uninstalled a bunch of programs, and now it started within about 8 minutes. I have it running in diagnostic startup.

8 minutes is still way too long.
Is this with just the programs XP needs in order to load ? |

Please do let us know your system specs. And as others have described above, you also should make a Hijack This log.

It's mostly with XP's programs, but there are a few anti-virus programs as well.
What are system specs? I'll do Hijack This in just a second here. My mom just found her username in the same starting place again, and it's really bugging her. She's got no links, desktop icons, etc. There's only ZORK1 and SWBG icons (which, by the way, I uninstalled about two months ago). Last edited by mrhowdeedoo; 12-10-2004 at 09:08 AM. |
