Change a dynamic ip to static
hi, is there a way you can change your ip address from a dynamic to a static one. does anyone know of a website, or can it be done with a router? (i have a d-link d-604) also are there any risks involved i noticed on this one website, it seems as if it exposes your computer www.dyndns.org?
thanks |

Which IP? Your real world IP or the private IP (192.168.x.x) of your machine? The only way to change the former to static is get a static IP account from your ISP.

No-IP.com doesn't give you a static IP, it merely is a DNS (domain name server) that links your dynamic IP to a domain name. You run their prog on your computer, it will periodically check your IP and update their records if it changes, then the domain name will be resolved through their servers. This is really only pratical if you 1) want to host a webserver and 2)don't want to pay for a static IP. Note: Most ISP's prohibit running a webserver without the proper account and can even get your service taken away if caught.
