Wireless card for inspiron 5100

recently my dad got a laptop-dell inspiron 5100 for doing work in excel/taxes...it came with a built in wireless card but it is HORRIBLE...i can literally put this thing next to the wireless router and get 50-60% signal, i also tested by adding the PCMCIA card from my PC to his for a while, the signal was alot better. I saw an ad for this
card for 19.99 at officemax....my friend has the same one and said it gets much better signal then any other kinds (even though he just has the usual 802.11b router) either way im assuming this will work with my regular microsoft 802.11b router and as long as its as good as a regular external PCMCIA card ill get it, if it works better then other cards then thatd be good too but as long as i can improve it so that i can get signal with the computer without standing next to the router ill be good.

all the newer laptops come with wireless G, is it possible your router is a B ?
not that that should make a lot of differance, but may be something to look at.

That inspirion should have an dell or intel wireless card installed ( probably all made by intel anyway). Check which one and see if there are any updated drivers for the card. He could have an 1150, 1300, 1350, 2100, or even a 2200 mini PCI card installed. I am using a 2200BG card on my Dell C400 and have noticed improved perfromace with updated drivers. You might also want to check the dell community forums and see if other 5100 users are having similar problems.
