Broadcast packets to port 137
My PC is constantly sending out packets about once per second. Using a packet sniffer, it looks like they are UDP packets sent to port 137 on my network's broadcast address. Killing the process netdde.exe seems to stop these packets. Everything I have read about netdde.exe seems to say that this process is benign and I shouldn't worry, but I am still wondering what this is about. Anybody have any ideas?

That's your netbios port. If you are not print and file sharing, disable netbios in your advanced TCP/IP properties, WINS tab.

I figured as much, and I am file and print sharing, so this isn't completely unexpected. I'm not terribly familiar with the mechanics of simple Windows file sharing, so I didn't know if constant broadcasting is how it works. I guess it probably is, though.

There is the option of installing NetBEUI for filesharing - then disabling netbios over TCP/IP won't matter and will actually enhance your security.
