Smile Crossover networking

i have two computers at my house and would like to link them up via a crossover cable as it is the cheapest option and from what ive heard it is a very efficient way of connecting two computers. I connected them and the computer without the internet connection can see the LAN connection and the internet connection but when i try to surf the web i can't do it. I have been through the network setup wizard many times and still i cant go onto the internet. Please Help!!!
