I am getting married next week and want
to be able to share the Cox cable modem between the two computers w/o setting up a LAN> One computer only uses the connection for e-mail anyway. I know I can not run a co-ax splitter into two cable modems. So I will be using 1 modem and running the cat 5 into 1 computer and the usb into the other. I realize that I probably can only have on computer on the net at a time. Both computers have the motorola drivers installed. Can this be done?

sure, just unplug the one your not useing and plug the other one in.
but I would strongly recommend you getting a router and having both computers on at the same time if at all possibel |

As far as having one plugged in with a cat5 and the other with a USB, your ISP probably won't let you do this without paying for 2 IP's. Just do like bailey said and swap the cat5 back and forth.

Basic routers are so cheap, just go get one. It will give you the extra security of a hardware firewall. There is no need to actually set up a real network unless you want to.

OK I will do that
What do I plug in where?
( In anticipation of the newlywed jokes)And I don't get sure, just unplug the one your not useing and plug the other one in. but I would strongly recommend you getting a router and having both computers on at the same time if at all possibel I guess I need to know what the router accomplishes. I coud just unplug the cat 5 at the modem and plug my other computer in. Why both computers on at the same time. Last edited by Omega Man; 12-27-2004 at 03:35 AM. |

if the two computers are fairly close you would connect the router to the modem via the wain port, then connect each computer to the router's lan ports, they are rj45 switching ports, and most newer routers have at least 4 of them, use a standard eathernet patch cable.
if the second computer is a long distance away and you don't want to run a cat-5 cable to it, you have the option of going wireless to the second computer by useing a wireless router, which is also fairly enexpensive. the second computer may already have a rj45 lan port in the back of it, if not , a very cheap nic card can be pluged into it to give you this feature, |
