XP Connect to Net, But will not display page.

Here is my problem...

I have XP professional and have been surfing the internet (dial-up) with no problems for over a year. Everything was working great.

Then all of a sudden my ISP (earthlink) connects to the internet (showing a IP address and connected on the earthlink status icon) but I cannot display any pages. Yahoo IM, MSN IM, Callwave and any other web based program will not work.

I go to the CMD prompt and try to ping another computer's IP address, does not work - timed out. I try to ping yahoo.com....does not work - timed out.

I check to make sure no proxy settings were checked and nothing visual changed under Control panal > Internet settings...everything looks fine!

I tried this command:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

and rebooted my computer...still the same problem.

A friend recommended I use WINSOCKS.... I tried it to no avail..

I am totally confused here... I dont think anyone has gotten into my computer and messed anything up.... I am running the latest NOD32 and Sygate versions. I feel half way confident my connection is secure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!

Thanks,
Richard

1. Open a command prompt and type ipconfig /flushdns

2. Open your network connections, right click on your dialup connection, select properties. On the Networking tab, highlight TCP/IP, go to properties. Change your DNS settings from automatically obtain to the following 2 entries:

207.69.188.185
207.69.188.186

Try uninstalling and reinstalling your modem with a fresh driver.

I will try uninstalling / installing modem tonight.

On another note, here is a suggestion that I found on another forumn that did not help me........but I would like to add here as a reference for anyone else who finds this thread in the future. Hope it helps someone.

Connect but Cannot Browse Registry Fix

Works on Xp Pro and Home. Not tested on 2000. Great for resetting winsock when connected using dial-up, DSL or cable but unable to browse any web page. I know how frustrating it is. Specially when you upgrade from dial-up to broadband. Enjoy!

Click on Start, then Run. Type regedit.

FIRST OF ALL BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY (File --> Export registry file --> Export Range = All --> Enter a filename and remember the location --> Save)

Your registry file is backed up. Next:

Click once on HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE so that it is selected.

Then click on File, then on Load Hive.

Go to My Computer the C Drive, then click twice on the Windows or Winnt folder, then the Repair folder, then click twice on the system or system.bak file.

Name the new Key "xp".

Minimize the Registry Editor.

Click on Start, Run, and type in cmd.

Type in the following:

reg copy hklm\xp\controlset001\services\winsock2 hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock2 /s /f

There is a space (not a carriage return or Enter) separating "reg copy hklm\xp\controlset001\services\winsock2" and "hklm\system\currentcontrolset\services\winsock2 /s /f"

You will get a message that the operation completed successfully.

Exit DOS or command shell.

Maximize the Registry Editor. Select the xp folder that was created.

Click on File, then UnLoad Hive.

You will be prompted to confirm the removal of the folder, click Yes.

Exit the Registry.

Connect and browse. (No need to reboot the computer.)

Beats having to re-install Windows and having to pull your hair all night long in utter frustration!!! I know! Been there, done that!

Regards,
Richard

Send a message via MSN to Klutz_atlantis
I'm not sure if this helps, but have you tried scanning for spyware or viruses? I know you said above you're pretty confident in you're security, but I never hurts to try.

Also, have you contacted your ISP or know someone who has Earthlink? Perhaps the trouble is from thier end? I had trouble with my MSN dial-up (when I still had it) a couple times: once was MSN and the other time was line noise (phone company). I don't think either one of these is your problem, but as I stated before never hurts to try.

Well I unstalled the modem and tried to reinstall....however when I did that my ISP software - Earthlink - lost all of its settings and I attempted to re-set it up. However to do this you have to be able to dial up and connect to Earthlink to get your settings / local numbers.

On another note - not sure if I had said this..but my computer beeps three times during POST. I would think this is video card or memory...but all is working fine on computer EXCEPT internet connection.

Oh well unless there are any other suggestions.. I guess the fight on this is almost over and I will wipe my hard drive tonight and reinstall OS and all the programs....

Thanks!
Richard

You do not need Earthlink software to set up the dialup. All you need is your login name, password, and local number, and you can set that up in the standard Windows dialup networking wizard. You can research local numbers on Earthlink's website from any computer, and your login name is your email address (username@earthlink.net, username@mindspring.com, whatever). Before you wipe your drive, uninstall the Earthlink software completely and try setting up a new connection this way. Connect and try surfing with IE or whatever browser you use.
