Ethernet

My cousin just reformatted his computer. He has a dell and said he cant find his disk for the ethernet which he needs to install so he can get the internet backup. I was wondering if in fact he does need a software disc, and he he still cant find it can he just buy a new ethernet card?

Thanks for anyhelp

I would think he needs the disk. The computer doesn't know what the heck the card it, what it does, when it does what it does, how it whats the information it requests and only a driver can tell that to the computer.

The Dell should come with a Dell Resource CD, but if, as you say he lost it, I am sure you can download it from somewhere.

Can easily get the drivers from Dell if you have the service tag number.

Should be able, using the service tag, to get to the correct part of the Dell site. Download the drivers to a floppy. While you are there get the rest of the drivers for the system on floppies so you won't have the same problem the next time the system crashes.

Not likely they will fit on a floppy - you will have to burn a CD or use a USB key. The Intel onboard NIC drivers are several megabytes.

I just helped somone with reformating their dell and they had the resource CD and got on their broadband, so the drivers are for sure on that cd. Look here for driver download
