Acceptable pings.
Hello guys/gals,
I'm just curious what is a acceptable ping when u ping either yahoo or google. I do this through the command prompt through Windows XP. I play a lot of online games and I have noticed that my pings have increased within the servers i play often. I actually rent one Halo server and my ping was always at 66 or so and now it's always at 133. My pings with yahoo and google average out to about 100ms. Now is this right? My computer specs are as follows: P4 2.8E Mobo: Intel D875 and using the onboard LAN 1 gig of RAM ATI 9800pro 128mb Network specs as follows: Router: D-Link DI-604 and the firmware is updated Modem: D-Link DCM-210 ISP: Charter Communications high speed cable with 3 down and 256 up. I would appreciate any input/advice you can give me. I did talk to the customer service at Charter and all they have me do is the tracert tests and ping tests but never come to a solution. This has been going on for about 2-3 weeks now and it's annoying. Also another thing that I noticed is that one day I had a power outage for about 15 minutes and when I got the power back up I was lag free! And when I did the ping tests i was averaging about 25ms! theyosh

Thanks GLC, it looks like you're averagin 40ms. I guess maybe there are too many Cable users in my neighborhood since my latency is over 100ms during the afternoon and evenings and during the weee hours of the night and early morning my latency drops down to about 25-30ms.
I have thought about switching over to DSL but when I called them they said I was right at the border line to be able to receive the 3mb down and 384kb up speed. Now with my current cable service I am paying 39.95 USD/month including applicable taxes. And I do not have a contract with them so I can cancel anytime. Now my local DSL provider which is AT&T want to charge 51.95 USD/month and this is without the applicable taxes. Another thing with DSL is that they want me to sign a one year contract. I forgot exactly how far I am from the nearest switch station but they did state that i was borderline to receive the 3mb down and 384kb up connection, have any of you guys purchased a DSL service with the speeds i mentioned while being considered borderline? And if so how is your connection? I am tired of this problem from Charter and want DSL instead but I want to make sure since I have to sign a one year contract with them. I've had this problem with Charter off and on for the past 8 months and I don't think it's fair to me since I pay my bills on time every single month and I skimped out on the 24.95 plan just so I can have a good online gaming experience. theyosh |

Borderline distance is not good. All it takes is a slight impairment in your phone line to drop sync and you will have to step down to the next lower speed plan.

Yeah that is what I was afraid of. Thanks for the confirmation GLC I really appreciate the help you have given me. I guess I'm just going to have to stick with cable and hope that Charter will fix this inconvenience.
