Exclamation Problem with Wireless Networks & Printers

Hello everyone! My dad purchased a laptop last month for his work. They have a wireless network at his office and I added him to the network there and networked their office printer for everyone. Everything worked fine. This weekend he purchased a wireless router and made a small home network. He shared his home printer & added it to his printers. When he got to work this morning, his computer will not see the printer at work. He kept getting a spooling error when he tried to print. He deleted the printer & now he cannot add the printer because he is only seeing his home network to which he is not connected. How can he switch between networks so that he can use his home network at home & his work network at work?

I apologize if this is an easy fix, but I couldn't find the answer anywhere & I'm a wireless network newbie!
Thanks, Ms. Azgir

What version of Windows, and which service pack revision? If it's XP, any revision, is Windows controlling the wireless or is the card utility controlling it? It makes a difference - the goal is to have both network profiles stored as preferred networks to autoconnect to.

It is WinXP

WinXP is controlling the network. (Set up was through the control panel.) The wireless routers are different brands...does that matter?

Red face Ooops...

Just reread your post. Sorry--you said card utility not router. Duh!

Okay, Windows is controlling the wireless card, not the card utility, right? Is this SP2? If not, it would be to your advantage to install it, the wireless config is greatly improved.

Correct...Windows is controlling the wireless card. I'm not sure which SP he is operating under (he has the computer with him). I'm going to get my hands on the computer in a couple of hours & will check. If it is not SP2, I will upgrade.

With SP2, it's simple. It will detect that there is one or more wireless networks in range and pop up a balloon. Click on the icon and see what it finds, click on the one you want and hit Connect. If a key is required, it will ask for it. It should then store that network as an autoconnect for next time.

Thumbs up SP2 sucks for wireless connectivity

Look what the problem maybe is that you dad needs to reconnect to the network and retype the user name and password to be able to print

Now this is only if the printer is being shared

SP2 also has a firewall I would disable that and any other firewalls

If the printer is a network printer then try to ping it and see if it replies

If you can ping something else on the network

Find out if the problem is a connectivity problem
If you need more help have your dad call us we can help
