Why didn't the modem work?
Ok, well I recently moved one of my computers down to a friends whos computer was on the fritz all the time and they werent able to get on the net, so I figured why not double the speed as well as let em on the net? I didn't use the comp anyways. Here comes the problem.
I didn't have a modem in my computer, so I moved the one from her HP Pavillion over to mine. In the upper PCI slots the comp froze everytime I tried to start the wizard for MSN net access. Then in the middle set of PCI slots the wizard wouldn't freeze the comp, but just couldn't detect a dial tone. In the bottom PCI slot the modem worked. Why? It took me two days(a few hours total) to figure it out since I didn't have any access to the net from her house and I had only so many resources at my disposal. Why did it do it? What changed when I moved it to a different slot? Went from COM2, to COM3, to I am guessing COM4 after the last move. Thanks for any help. Windows XP is the OS. XP 1700+ at stock speeds since I was afraid the OC was a possible problem. 2nd system in my sig. EDIT:Oh ya, I didn't know which section to put it in, so I figured to put this thread in Net Connections. Feel free to move. |

If it was a internal/external modem for dialup, com 3 should have been the correct spot.

I didn't install any drivers since, as I said, I had no internet access and I tried to burn a few drivers from my house for the 2nd run at the computer and they didn't work, so I was left with the drivers Windows XP picked for the modem.
Sauron:Is there any reason that the modem should not work in the other PCI slots? I am goign to check what COM(1-3or 4?) the modem was set in in its working state. |

Your problems will probably be solved if you cough up a few bucks for a real modem. That OEM HP modem is probably a $10 winmodem. If you depend on dialup, you still can't beat a real hardware controlled non plug and play modem, and external serial port models are the best unless you have an ISA slot.
