Is XP on one of the computers? It has a network connection wizard to allow you to set up a network easily, I would run this. (ME has one as well, but I found it to be more trouble than it was worth). After running the wizard see if both computers show up in Network Places. If they show up there then you can easily share a folder by right clicking, then properties and enabling sharing on the sharing tab.

It gives you an option to put the wizard on a floppy to run on both (I do not think 2000 has a wizard, but I am not sure, never had to look.)

No wizard in 2000, and it doesn't support simple file sharing like XP, it only has traditional NT-style users and permissions, the closest you can get to simple sharing is enable the guest account. You will have to run the wizard on the XP machine and make the disk, and run that on the 2000 machine.
