DSL Modems
My problem is two-fold. Download speeds range from 1014 to 1181; up speed between 74 and 104. ISP says up to 1536 down and 128 up. Second problem: I lose connection about three times a day. I power down and disconnect modem supplied by ISP, let it sit a couple of minutes and restart. Everything will be OK for a few hours and then I have to go through the same procedure again. Question: Is there a difference in modems and would it be worth while to invest in another or am I caught between a rock and a hard place?

Who is your provider and what model is your modem? What operating system, and are you using a router or direct connect (and is it USB or Ethernet if direct)? Are you using PPPoE connection software?

Covad is my ISP. Modem is ZyXEL Prestige 600 series, ADSL. Windows XP, direct connect, USB and no PPPoE software that I am aware of.

Getting off USB and onto Ethernet would be the single best thing you can do. Which exact model Zyxel?

I had a much similar problem, although I use my Ethernet to connect modem to wireless router to my computer and I use cable internet (Charter Pipeline). I would lose signal about 3-4 times a day, at least the times that I noticed! I would power surge the cable modem to try and get the signal back as well and it would return for a short while and then lose connection again. Anyways, point to my story is I had the cable modem replaced and it wound up that I had a bad modem.
I am not saying this is what is wrong for sure so dont go out and buy or have a new modem installed!!! Try switching from USB to Ethernet first and see what happens, as glc stated above... Then let us know how things are turning out.AK
