After the virus/malware

My wife's pc, running XP Home, "stopped working" which translated into wouldn't dialup. I ran Norton and found some malware and removed it.

Tried the dialup, gave me a message to contact M$. Tried to reload the ISP software setup (PeoplePC). It ran, logged into their site and downloaded, logged off and *almost* completed the setup. Tried to dialup, got the same error about going to Microsoft.

What should I look for, what to do?

TIA,

MK
