band width
I know or i think i know I have a bad tel. line. (dial up) The line has a lot of noise on it and the phone co. is going to work on it. They feel that the line is not the problem. My comp. says i am running at 40 kbps but running a test shows it at around 20 kbps. The phone co. thinks something is eating up my band width. Is there a way I can check this? I have Tren Micro internet security +spyguard+cwshredder. I think my comp. is prity clean. This problem is not new but it seams that I am timeing out more often. Could use some help.

as far as I know, a dial-up ISP can report back to you any connection speed they want to, to see what it actually is, you can use sights like pcpitstop to give you your correct speed,
phone lines is the biggest thing that will affect the speed of your connection due to errors and retries, bad lines will be the cause of poor connections. hopefully if and when the phone company correct it you will have a better connection. at my location the best connection the can be achived is about 18k and the phone co. is aware of it and will not do any repaires to the lines. |

Baily the tel. co.just left. They did a test. They cam up with20. Repair man said much to slow. They will fix it even if they must run a new line. That remains to be seen. I was also told that I could notify the FCC. But will that do any good? Thanks for the reply.

I have seen in places where if you can get 14.4 the phone company is not required to do any more then that. That was a few years ago, however if you have static that is interfearing with the voice they will fix that, and static that effects voice will effect dial up speeds.
The connection speed your modem reports to you OS, weather is be 14.4, 24,000 26400, 28800, 31200, 33600, 48000, that is just the speed at which your modem established the handshake and connected. So, lets say you connect at 40,000, but due to static on the phone line packets end up failing, timing out and having to be retransmitted slows down the whole connection. That could explain why things have been getting worse over time.

I went to pitstop and one other for speed tests. They both where prity close to the same. Costomer service called and said that it was much to slow and they would do what ever it took to get rid of the noise and pick up the speed. They also informed me that dsl would be in the area shortly and if I would be interested. I told them one problem at a time. That dsl would not be that much faster if every thing remains the same. They informed me that it would be repaired. Could Verizon be changing? The repair man took his own speed test an said it was way to slow. Heres hoping.

the difference with DSL is it is all digital instead of Analog like your dial up.
However, DSL can be hit and miss, I have seen DSL work great on lines you could barely talk on, while in other cases seen DSL not work when you could not hear any static on the line. To me, DSL is a case by case, line by line issue. |

Sometimes, they put in what is called home run wiring. In short, they put a Filters outside your home, at the NID(network interface device) allowing one path for DSL and the other path filtered for phones.
If that is the case you will NOT get a DSl signal on the side that is filtered. There are good reasons to do so. It bypasses bad wires. |
