I was downloading some files on this W98 machine at work from an FTP site using ACE FTP (free) and it shows the full complement of folders. 32. Unfortunatly, it is a dial-up so it was taking forever.
So when I got home I went to the same site and saw only 19 folders. This was using a W2K computer on cable and using the same FTP client. Strange. Shut down the client and reconnected, still only showed 19 folders. So I go into another part of the house where a W98 computer is on the nw and connected to the site. Shows all 34 folders on the server. I have checked to make sure that all the settings are the same on all three machines and the only diff I can find is the OS. The free version of ACE FTP is not supported anymore so they arnt helping. I cant say for sure but I think this is a recent problem. I think I was able to see everything on the server from the W2K machine before. I dont DL alot and most of it is from work. I have talked to the guy who sets up and runs the FTP site and he doesnt know. Anybody have any ideas. TIA

What happens when you use a different FTP client or a browser? Are some of the folders links to virtual directories? (This is where if you click on a folder, it takes you to a folder that's actually a subfolder of one of the main folders)

I havent tried a different client yet. But I have the dl for the original install and ama thinking or uninstalling and reinstalling this client.
I am not having any luck using a browser. I type in the address bar... "ftp://username assword@tcarchive.dns2go.com/" The is the info I put into the FTP client and from a browser the info returns "windows cannot access this folder....a connetion with the server cannot be established" So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong there. I tried EI and Mozilla.None of the foldrs are virtual according to the webmaster. |

How are you with command line? You can try the builtin Windows FTP client.

Maybe I can be more clear. Normally the files on the server are alphabetically listed and I can see folders a~z. On this comp (w2k) I am only seeing a~m, there is plenty of room in the window for more fiiles but n~ z are not listed.
I have been trying to use the command prompt but cannot get the syntax right. Same as with using the browser as above. Do you see a problem with the way I typed info into the address bar? Ha, just reviewed that post about the browser and there is a emoticon where I had typed a colon followed by a p. should read "usernamecolonpassword. |

At a command prompt, change to your local working directory for your downloads and uploads (i.e. cd\downloads)
ftp At the ftp prompt, type help for a command list. open ftp.site.com It will prompt for username and password. dir will show all directories. |

Im here at work so I am using the W98 comp. Changed to the dl directory and at the ftp prompt, i typed open tcarchive.dns2go.com
It returns >ftp: connect :10061 then ftp> At this prompt I wait for the hour glass to stop and if I then type dir, it returns, not connected. I then connected using ACEFTP and I connect OK. What am I doing wrong? TIA |

Home now, on the W2K, at the ftp prompt, I type ftp.tcarchive.dns2go.com and it returns, connection refused.
Check in with ACEFTP and I get in but as before, only the first 19 entries show up. Maybe this proggy is compatable with 2K. But why cant I get in with the built in Win client? |

I got connection refused with command line on 2k here.
Also got a connection refused with WS-FTP LE, and a host not found with Bulletproof FTP. |

I DL a copy of WS FTP and cant get thru with it either. The only diff I can find so far is that using ACE FTP I have a place to enter a port (2122) Cant find that in command line or WS FTP.
Could that be the difference? I have checked the address over andf over again. |

That makes a big difference - you didn't say he was using a nonstandard port.
In WS-FTP, you enter the port number on the advanced tab in session properties. I just got in, but as you didn't give me the username/password, it booted me. Command line: C:\download>ftp ftp> open tcarchive.dns2go.com 2122 Connected to tcarchive.dns2go.com. 220-TechConnect Archive 220-Welcome to the Service Info Archive, a wholly independent service of 220-one of the users at TechConnect. 220-(visit TC at http://go.ezboard.com/bofficemachines) 220-System uptime: 14 days, 22 hours, 15 minutes, 23 seconds 220-Your IP has been logged: 220 Please enter your name: User (tcarchive.dns2go.com none)): none331 User name okay, Need password. Password: 530 Password not accepted. Login failed. ftp> quit 221-Thanks for visiting the Archive, none ! 221 Goodbye. Control connection closed. C:\download> |

Thanks for your help and patience, GLC. I am at work (W98) andI just tried the command line procedure and was able to get in. So when I get home I will try from the 2K. Also I printed the screens from the ACE FTP client with preferences so I can check those. Thanks again for the infor. I will return.

Good news. Command line works when I add the port and WS FTP works when I add that port. I am downloading as we speak.
However, ACE FTP is still not working even tho I checked all the settings against the W98 machine. I may reinstall it later but I am doing OK now. In 30 days I will have to buy WS FTP, which doesnt bother me. Only that I should be able to use ACE. Thanks for your help GLC, you have come thru for me again. Coincidenly, I got a bulletin today from Ricoh that the 4MB flash cards and the more recent 64 MB SD card are passe and we arent doing that anymore. Now we will update mfps over the newwork using FTP. Everytime I get the answers, they change the questions. |

If you need a free FTP client, try SmartFTP.
