norton AV enable
hi,
My question is this: I run Norton AV 2002, (which I am thinking of dropping if I can find better). This morning my auto protect is shut off, a big red X through it gave me the first hint. I tried to just rght clk it to turn it on,no go!. I opened it and tried to enable it that way, and get a script error. It reads; @ title bar: Internet explorer script error. ! An error has occured in the script on this page. Line: 887 Char: 5 Error Unspecified Code: 0 URL: res://C:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVUI.dll/navstats.htm Do you want to continue running scripts on this page? yes no Thats the error, and I have shut off every start up program I can. I use TDS-3, Norton Av, have a router, and sygate pro. Along with some spyware APPs. The last thing I did was to put in a new sound card which shouldn't do anything to the AV. And the AV ran fine immediatly after. Any ideas would be appreciated. thanks Brian |

There are a number of viruses around at the moment that specifically target antivirus programs, try downloading and installing AVG7 from www.grisoft.com this is a free virus tool and is very good, you could also run an online scan here at http://housecall.trendmicro.com

2002??
I'm not sure 2002 is still even supported by Symantec. Personally, I would upgrade to version 2005.
You can do so at a discount as a previous owner of Norton, on the Symantec web-site. good luck, Bruce |

Symantec still support Norton antivirus 2002 and as long as the subscription is up to date 2002 will continue to receive the latest virus definitions.
Norton antivirus 2005 is considered to be full of bloat and unneccessary utilities that hog system resources and slow your computer down. At the moment the best free antivirus programs are AVG7 from Grisoft and Avast from Avast . Should you wish to purchase an antivirus program then some consider the all round security package from Trendmicro to be very good value for money. |

...'mike'...I was addressing the fact that "RFV"..., whatever his handle is mentioned that Norton AV had "utilities" issues...So you were not adressing the issue, here.
I don't understand the statement at all because AV 2005 has no "utilities", or if so, I'm not using mine to the fullest potiential! (For the record, I use Symantec Internet Security 2005) As far as 'bloat' & 'memory-hog' goes---baloney*....here we go again---my system's smooth and fast, at home and at work. The Corporation I work for uses it exclusively on all servers & work-stations. Today's computers can handle the needed 'resources' necessary. I feel comfortable using the best rated Anti-Virus software available. I'm not knocking other choices...you get what you pay for, sooner or later...do your own research, the imforation's out there. Best Regards to all* Bruce |

http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/software/...9172958,00.htm I've asked you this before, and will ask you again. If you are so happy with Norton, please start helping people here with their Norton issues instead of just defending it when someone points out its deficiencies. I have yet to see you jump into a thread where someone is having a problem with Norton with any kind of troubleshooting suggestions. By the way, when was the last time you called the Symantec support line? I hope you didn't choke when they asked you for your credit card number before they would assist you with your issue. Briab, I've seen this with Norton 2002. It was a good app, but its engine is no longer robust enough to deal with today's viruses, and 2003 is going to have similar issues pretty soon. It's time to upgrade, to whatever. |

Bruce,
You might be interested to know that MS, in house, uses CA's EZ. No, I don't work for MS nor CA.
