IBM Thinkpad help

My friend picked up an IBM Thinkpad with no battery..he got it cheap ..so we did manage to get it connected through mains power with the lead from mine but when we started it up it just shows a black screen with a little padlock at the left hand side of the screen ..so I would say we need a password is there anyway round this or will I have to contact IBM ..can anyone help me plz ..I can't even get into the bios

You do need to contact IBM.

sorry it's ok guy's I've contacted IBM about it and they say it will need a new M/B..as it has the password built in to it..so with the condition of the thinkpad it's not worth it... so it will be broken up for spares..thanx for the help anyway..
