Network Problem
I have 2 machines networked together and after re-installing Windows XP on one machine and cleaning the second machine I find I cannot get access to Internet (NTL Broadband) with network box NOT set top box, the problem is only on the machine that is networked not the machine that has the NTL box..
There is an error in network connection icon on both machines showing "Limited or no Conectivity" the icon for USB connection to the Modem is fine both machines can see files on each others machine and the machine that has NTL network box can access internet with no problem but the second one cannot access internet, the repair doesn't sort problem out and i think the IP address's are wrong the IP address's are as follow as displayed in Status, Connection Status, Main Machine (NTL) connection 82,19,58,207 Default Gateway 82,19,58,254 Subnet mask 255,255,255,0 Second Machine 169,254,60,104 Can I force a new IP address on second machine, but what would the address be and I presume the address would have to be changed on the LAN of the first machine that connects to the second machine. I hope someone can understand my problem Thanks for any help. Regards John.m |

You have to enable sharing on the USB connection to the NIC. This will set the NIC on the host machine to 192.168.0.1 and enable it to assign a 192.168.0.x IP to the networked machine.
How are they interconnected? Crossover cable from NIC to NIC or a hub/switch and 2 standard patch cables? Do you have any firewalls? Disable them (including the builtin XP firewall) till you get it sorted out. |

The NTL connection is via USB connection, the LAN connection to second machine is a Crossover cat 5 cable, from the PCI Lan card to PCI Lan card.
On both network connections in "My Network Places" the icon is displaying a Yellow triangle with asterisk saying connectivity problem. I am just thinking as I have re-installed Windows XP on the machine that connects to NTL I may not have run the Network setup wizard, so when i get the chance I will try this on both machines. I use Zone Labs Firewall on both machines but disabled both and also disabled Windows Firewall as they have SP2 installed. This setup has worked it was only when machine was full of Virus and spyware that I zapped and re-installed XP. Regards John.m |

Run the network setup wizard.
It will a small, hidden DHCP service that will assign an IP to the machines that connect to the network. Or, alternativley, you could set the master (MACHINE DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET) an IP of 192.168.0.1, and then the other machine the IP of 192.168.0.5. On the machine that gets the internet from the other computer, put the master computer's IP (192.168.0.1) into the box that says (Primary DNS Server) That should work too. Any more problems, let us know! Hope this helped. AD
