alllllllllll-righty then. So i'm at my school and we have service electric as our net provider. im on wireless and my friends one house down are on hardwired.
(im almost sure that doesnt make a difference in the matter to follow) heres my question, why is it... that when i setup a server... i.e. open quake2 and start a server, and give them my correct IP... it doesnt ever show up. (one small time it did for a milisecond on cs, but the lag was 9999 and they didnt have a prayer of connecting) the server will be running, but they will not be able to put my ip address into their server list and find me, nor I they. there has got to be a way to solve this so i can rocket jump on their heads instead of studying for micro econ. as always... any and all help will be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a software firewall on? If you do, turn it off or setup an exception for the game. Do you have the appropriate port(s) forwarded in your router?

I actually just found this link that's kinda cool. It says that Quake 2 runs on port 27910. Do you have a static IP setup on the server machine? If so, you need to forward port 27910 to your LAN IP (ie 192.168.0.1). You can do it with a dynamic IP, but that's going to change every time you reboot, and you will have to go into your router setup to set the new IP. HTH
