Internet Connection Problem

I just installed XP home onto my laptop and i have a NIC card for the laptop that reads fine when i put it in, when i plug the Cat5e cable into the NIC the status of the NIC shows that theres a connection on the start menu, i tried running the software i got with my ISP and when it looks for the NIC and the connection all it finds is the NIC says there isnt a connection, then the status of the NIC on the start menu goes to The connection is limited or no connectivity......if i take the wire out the lap top and hook it into my desktop the connection is fine.....i tired installing the dirvers for the NIC but i get the same problem.....does this sound like a NIC card problem? and suggestions would help

Did you tried to go on internet witout instaling that ISP software, most of ISP-ies nowdays send auto dhcp configuration for cable networks!!!
Or when says that your connection has no connectivity or is limited try to right click on your connection then from menu choose repair!!!

If you are connecting directly to a cable modem, you have to turn the power to the cable modem off for a few minutes to reset the MAC registration, then reboot the computer. You have to repeat when switching the cable back to the other computer. You should get a router if you want to have more than one computer connected.
