slow speed with wireless connection only????????
i have 3 pc's (2 wireless laptops and 1 wired desktop) hooked up to my linksys wrt54gs wireless router. all pc's r running XP Pro. all pc's r less than a year old. i have comcast cable modem with the 6mb down 768 up. i have a motorola 5120 cable modem. my problem is that i can only get about 2mb down on the wireless pc's. when i do speed test with a laptop hardwired into the router i get the full 6mb down. if i bypass the router and plug a pc directly into the modem i get the full 6mb down. i have static ip address for all devices behind the router (1 xbox, 2 laser printers, 3pc's) and dhcp is disabled. i am using 128bit wep security with a shared authentication key, mac filtering enabled, SSID broadcast disabled. the router firewall is turned on, i have no software firewalls running on any of the pc's. i have block anonymous internet requests and filter (ident port 113) checked and filter multicast and filter Internet NAT redirection unchecked on the router. my vpn passthrough settings are disabled i have my pc's and my router set to G network mode only, when i ping my router my latency is 18ms average.
if anyone has any ideas or recommendations as to how to fix my slow speed using wireless i am waiting for input from ya. The only dumb questions are the one's we dont ask........................

What kind of signal strength are you getting on the clients? Have you updated the router firmware to the latest and done a hard reset on the router, then a fresh setup?

my signal strength on all of the pcs is very good to excellent. my Firmware Version: v3.37.6. i did a hard reset on the router. with default settings and no security on the router or the pc i tried a speed test and still only get 2mb down. i have been able to get the full upload speed of 768 before and after the hard reset. i have the wireless security settings back on my router and pc's. i switched to wpa-psk with tkip. using mac filtering, diabled SSID broadcast.
do you think the router is malfunctioning at least on the wireless side. as i mentioned earlier i have my desktop hardwired into the router and i get the full speed. also when i hardwire a laptop into the router i am able to get the full 6mb down? do you have any other suggestions, ideas, or tweaking methods that i could try? |

hey guys just wanted to get back and let everyone know that i figured out what was causing my wireless connection to be limited to about 2.0mbps download speeds. i went to dsl reports and downloaded the Dr. TCP utility, followed the instructions and adjusted just the TCP receive window to 35250. restarted my pc, ran another speed test and now im getting the full speed that i am paying for from comcast. YIPPEEE.
i tried this utility originally when i first noticed the speed problem with my wireless, but i think i tweaked to much cause i totally killed my wireless network connection and had to reinstall my nic drivers to get back up and running, so i just figured this utility was junk. good thing i decided to give it another shot except this time i tweaked one thing at a time, and tested (u know baby steps...). hope this helps anyone else who is having this problem. |
