Cool how can I ping a static IP on a standalone computer with a NIC

Hi All,

What an excellent forum. I am glad I found it.

My platform:
Dell Inspiron 5000 with Win 2000 Professional and a 3Com 10/100 NIC

Problem:

I have no probs setting up a peer to peer small business network with a hub/switch and/or other computers. Its just pinging a static IP on a standalone computer has got be stumped.

Therefore, I have just 1 standalone computer that I want to be able to ping a static IP number on it.

Pinging 127.0.0.1 is fine so I know that TCP/IP is working on the Notebook.
The host name is "Bebb" and I can also ping this hostname, the IP reported back in the ping is 127.0.0.1. I have also gone into through control panel etc. and checked the NIC is installed and functioning right - which it reports it is.

However, it will not ping the static IP of 192.1.1.1 with a subnet of 25.255.255.0 that I setup on this standalone Notebooks NIC ?

I have also tried the lmhosts file as well:
I set this up to be :

127.0.0.1 localhost
192.1.1.1 bebb

But it still doesn't acknowledge the IP address ?
So I am still lost as to how I can ping this static IP on a standalone computer or do I need to buy a hub to connect to ?

Thanks in advance

Bebby

127.0.0.1 works cuz it's a loopback test for your nic. But assigning a private static ip does not work if your computer is not connected to some kind of network.

What exactly are you trying to do?

Hi ya Omletteboy,

I am trying to use some software that states it will not work without a static ip being assigned to the computer. For some reason it cannot just resolve it at 127.0.0.1

So I am just trying to create a static IP so I can get the software to work.

Thanks for your help.

Cheers

might be a typo, but try re-assigning the IP to 192.168.0.1 w/ a subnet of 255.255.255.0
