Ethernet not working

Greetings,
My friend's HP 503n running windows xp SP1 will not connect to ethernet. Wireless works on it (USB) ...but we cant get the ethernet to... When you plug a ethernet cable in... the green light indicating it's plug in at the port comes on..... but it wont connect to the internet. when you unplug the cable it says a network cable has been unplugged (doesnt say anything like this when you plug it in). When i plugged it in i tried using the setup new network wizard.... didn't work.

I also looked in device manager and that said the ethernet card is working properly.

Also, i connected a laptop through the same wire to make sure the wire was fine and that connection... that worked.

So i guess it has to be something with the computer... any idea's?

(the internet is through a linksys 802.11G router/cable internet)

Thanks for your time,
bdanner302

The first thing I would do is reinstall the ethernet card drivers, in device manager right click the ethernet card and choose uninstall, then reboot the computer. Allow the found new hardware wizard to reinstall the ethernet card and try the internet again.
