DSL connection drops
My Earthlink DSL connection drops usually every night when we are in sleeping. My connection isnt idle becuase I have bit torrent running. I dont know if there is a problem with the router I am using (Belkin 4 port wired) or the modem that we have. Earthlink could not give me no answers to this question when i contacted them. There are no devices like microwaves or wireless phones close to the modem.
Any ideas? |

Does the connection drop at the exact same time every night? That may point to some recurring event.

im not sure really when it drops during the night. It also has been dropping during the day, three or four times. Turning off the modem and unpluging the router for about 15 seconds and turn them back on and it fixes the problem. It sounds like it may be the modem to me, our contract with earthlink will be up this month so i will check into another broadband connection becuase I havnt been happy with them.

Earthlink's modems are garbage. Mine died last summer and I hooked up a Westell I had laying around, and it's been troublefree. If you are using your own router, you should take the modem out of the UHP (PPPoE with NAT) mode and run it in the bridge mode - and set up the PPPoE in the router. You do this on the Help tab somewhere, I don't remember exactly where once you are in there.

When you run ipconfig /all at a command prompt, the modem is the default gateway IP address. Mine was 172.16.0.254, I think the newer ones are 192.168.0.254.

I am having the same problem with Bellsouth. It works fine straight thru a modem but when I try and go thru my linksys router I can;t connect. My modem is westell and I had it configured as bridge and router as ppoe. It would connect for a few minutes then drop. Any more suggestions?

Update the firmware and do a hard reset on your Linksys.

Hi I have downloaded the latest firmware but it is in the form of an image. How do I get my router to update from that?

You will have to go into your router configuration, there should be an option there to update the firmware.

Thanks Doc I tried that but it would not work. However I went back to Linksys ftp site and there was an utility for my router version that I downloaded. It did everything for you and updated and well as see you can see it worked I am running thru the router now. Thanks for everyones help and you quick responses. Just remeber for Linksys if you can't update thru the router interface go download the utility tool for version router. It will save you some headaches.
Thanks again Lugoff81 |
