I have verizon dsl service in my home in NY. I am presently in florida and was informed my son moved back home. he is a college student and needs to do his work. how can he hook up to my DSL account from his laptop at the home in NY? I added him as a subaccount on the account. I have the verizon installation software with me. there is no router we have no network set up.
Thank you |

Have you any idea what type of modem you have in NY and what operating system does he have on his computer?

I am not familiar with that model but most dsl modems have more than one LAN connection on the back.
All he needs to do is connect a CAT5E cable from the LAN port on his computer to a spare LAN port on the modem, he does not need the verizon software. In control panel>internet options>connections> click "setup" this will start the internet connection wizard and just follow the on screen instructions for a "LAN" connection, and the wizard will do the rest. Is this dsl connection already functional and in use? |

He does not need to login, a dsl connection is on all the time once the initial setup and verification of password and user name have been made.
Make sure when he runs the wizard, to tell the wizard to make an internet connection direct and not via another computer as he will be connecting directly to the modem. |

He has to run the new connection wizard for PPPoE. This is a broadband connection that requires a login. He will need your master account name and password. This assumes the Westell is set to the bridge mode. How do YOU connect when you are there?

Thats a bit odd, but in that case he may have to do as gl suggested and use your master password and login name, if you don't know them its likely to be embedded in the modem software and will need the CD to access and activate it.

If he is being prompted for a username and password then maybe you can get them from Verizon and manually insert them on the setup GUI.
Any idea of a tech contact number for Verizon? |

Verizon is not like AOL, it doesn't use screen names, just subaccounts. All connections must use the master account login. His subaccount is just for his e-mail. It IS possible your Westell is in the router mode - if it is, he should only have to set it up as a standard LAN connection, no login required. |

I have Verizon DSL and the westell modem....
Here all you have to do is plug into the modem and power up... If you use more than pc you should use a router to split the connection... You do not need the software....it is plug and play ....unless you specifically set up a log on....but if the other pc does not have the software installed it should just connect on it's owm.... Just make sure you have the tabs "automatically obtain Ip" and " automatically obtain Dns" boxes checked in the network properties...should be a go
