Hello!
Nuked & paved PC, so this is a fresh install of all software Everytime I reboot the PC, Norton Anti-virus 2004 keeps apprearing up in lower tool-bar as "disabled". I'll open Norton up & "Enable Auto-Protect" shut down the PC then reboot, wouldn't ya know "Disabled" again.... I did all the virus updates & a system scan - no problems What's up with Norton??? |

The easiest solution is uninstall Norton and use something else.

Agreed.
Try AVG free edition.

this is 'help'???
too funny! these two above aren't much help, are they??
I suggest this, and I've don't it several times: Call Symantec's 1-800 'pay per incident'($...it says $29.95, or something..) number, and tell them something is wrong with their(your) software--that your not 'paying to fix their internal software issues', and they will talk you through it. I think they charge for novices that don't know what they are doing for installing, configuring issues, etc. I've got them on the phone several times and never spent a dime... I'm running the Trend Micro Suite right now, but have used Norton/Symantec for many years and have had very few complaints. They(Anti-Virus, Suites, Utilities, etc) all have their strong & weak points...! An improvement Symantec could make would be a far improved phone & web technical support program. Its terrible, and I think they should address this--its cost them alot of customers, without doubt! Good luck--If you like Norton, I suggest the 2005 Internet Security Suite--its a worthwhile upgrade. Bruce |

Did you try reinstalling? Back when I was still using norton a reinstall usualy fixed it (I needed to do that alot). BRVB, IMO, norton just isint worth the trouble. You have a big explanation on how to get help, but you shouldnt need to do all that to get your AV program working in the first place, especially if you have to try to not pay for the support. Why go through all the trouble when AVG can be downloaded and installed in less time than it would take to fix norton?

well...
Norton must be worth the 'trouble' to some folks because it usually comes out on top in most all reviews of security software, from very reputable sources. Thats just a fact--its arguably the best Anti-Virus detection available today.
I agree they need better tech support(many do, but I found TrendMicro's fast, efficient, and free!) but in the last 5 versions of Norton/Symantec I've seldom had a reason to contact them, and then it was minor at that. Most problems are pretty benign and easily fixed, just like with any other software-----'code' is not a perfect science. Most of the problems encountered are listed in their website database, as well as email support. Far as I know, and I've used it for a short trial period, AVG is not available in a 'Suite' with a firewall and other tools & 'utilities' like Norton's and TrendMicro. Also, to get all the benefit from AVG software, I think you have to get the full 'pay' version, anyway. To each their own---whatever works for you--go with it. I'm just a bit leary of most 'free' anything--my "inner voices" have always told me there is a trade-off or compromise in there somewhere, sometime...* AdAware and S & D seem to be exceptions, though at this time. Happy, healthy computing to you ! Bruce Cordova, Alaska |
