I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong but I think HJT1.98 is out of date now, I believe it should be 1.99.
Please check that you have the most up to date version, follow the prerequisites in this thread and if you need to do so, post a new log. http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=103171 There are a few people well versed in analysing HJT logs on this forum and I am sure they will be only to happy to help you, welcome to PC Mech.

You have a lot of problems there. If you don't have a lot of important files, it will be easier to reformat and reinstall. Some of the items you have don't respond to conventional scanning and removal techniques and will require some advanced knowledge. If you want to go through with a cleaning attempt, this will probably take several days.

I agree with GLC -- a reformat and reinstall is the easiest route to take. If you have a lot of data that you don't want to lose and don't ahve another computer onto which you can transfer it, we can try to run you through cleaning, but otherwise it's much quicker for us to walk you through reformatting.

Under normal circumstances, scanning with the recommended apps in the sticky thread would clean most of this up, but you have a Nail infection, and removing this is very complex, we really don't know of a right way to do it and it requires advanced knowledge of file management. The only tool I've found to get rid of this is under fire for having spyware itself, it's put out by a company that vends spyware.
You have only told us that you have used Housecall and it comes up with uncleanable trojans. Please read the sticky thread that rjfvillarosa has linked to and use some more tools before reposting any more logs, we won't give advice only based on a log until you do some more cleaning attempts using the recommended tools. ALL forums that analyze HJT logs have procedures you must follow first prior to posting a log, we are no exception, please read the thread completely. |

Several of the trojans on your list as "non-removable" can be healed using AVG anti-virus.
You may wish to try this first, though I have had no luck removing the "nail" infection. -Kev

A format and reinstall takes about an hour and a half to two hours depending on how big your hard drive is, what OS you are using and the amount of software you need to reinstall.
Do you have much data on your hard drive or have you backed it all up?, remember if you have backed it up you may have also backed up the viruses and trojans. |

I generally charge for three to four hours when I do a reformat and reinstall. That includes data backup, though. Reformatting my own machine generally takes longer, because I like to have everything just so. If you use the recovery CDs, that will make it significantly easier -- you won't have to repartition, click through installation prompts, or install drivers, and by default the stuff that came with the computer will be reinstalled. However, manufacturers usually install a lot of junk, so power users genrally opt to do a clean install rather than a restore.

before i reformat my system, i did a series of scanning and cleaning (AVG, Norton AV, Adaware, X-Cleaner, PC tuneup, MS antispyware beta). can u please reevaluate my HJT log? does my system needs reformatting? do i still have the nail.exe infection? thank you.

Someone else should probably look at your log, but it seems clean to me. I'm wondering if AVG et al. can now get rid of Nail, because there doesn't look like there's any sign of it left.

You have WAY too many things running in your startup. I'm surprised the computer even runs.

Yeah, that's one of the longest logs I've seen in a while.
Mine is about 12 entries long. -Kev |

Click "Start" on the bottom left of your screen and then click "Run"
In the window that opens Type MSCONFIG in the box and click OK This will open another window with six tabs near the top of the window, click start up and then click the little box in the top right corner to maximise the window, now you will see a list of all the programs running on your machine, count the number of programs that have a check mark in the box and post the number back here. |

FIFTY
I have four in mine. OK are you ready to do this the long way and avoid a format and reinstall? or the quick way and format and reinstall windows and all your software? Personaly I would go the long way and maybe learn something along the way. |

We need to know a little about your machine first.
1. What version of windows are you using? 2. If it's XP have you got SP2 installed? 3. What antivirus program are you running? 4. What spyware scanners do you have? 5. What peripherals do you have connected, like printers, scanners or camera's? I know this will take you a while but can you give me a list of all 50 items in the start up list? I am sure you have already said what OS you are using but list everything here anyway. |

Just look at his HJT log, Richard. That's got all his startups listed, the O4's. Looks like he's been taking the default installs on all his software and letting it all go into the startup.

First thing -- you should not use two anti-virus programs simultaneously. Unionstall one and keep the other. I recommend that you get rid of Norton and keep AVG.
Next -- You can get rid of startup programs via HJT. Check the following entries and click "Fix Checked": O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateManager] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Sonic\Update Manager\sgtray.exe" /r O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AutoTKit] C:\hp\bin\AUTOTKIT.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Recguard] C:\WINDOWS\SMINST\RECGUARD.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LTMSG] LTMSG.exe 7 O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Creative WebCam Tray] C:\Program Files\Creative\Shared Files\CAMTRAY.EXE O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [YBrowser] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\browser\ybrwicon.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightLAN 03] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPClient.exe" -l O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPInSightMonitor 03] "C:\Program Files\Visual Networks\Visual IP InSight\SBC\IPMon32.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Motive SmartBridge] C:\PROGRA~1\SBCSEL~1\SMARTB~1\MotiveSB.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mimboot.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [EarthLink Installer] " /C O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HP Software Update] C:\Program Files\HP\HP Software Update\HPWuSchd2.exe O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE O4 - Global Startup: Quicken Scheduled Updates.lnk = C:\Program Files\Quicken\bagent.exe O4 - Global Startup: SBC Self Support Tool.lnk = C:\Program Files\SBC Self Support Tool\bin\matcli.exe Get rid of the following if you are using an nVidia graphics card and not a VIA or Intel one: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [VTTimer] VTTimer.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\WINDOWS\system32\igfxtray.exe Get rid of the following if you don't have an iPod: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe O23 - Service: iPod Service (iPodService) - Apple Computer, Inc. - C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe |

Sorry to be so pedantic gl but I was going to talk him through slowly.
Quote:
For some reason hardware manufacturers/software writers seem to think that just because you have bought their product you want it running and ready to go all the time, but this is not quite true and all it actually does is make a drain on your system resources, by not allowing it to start up when windows starts you might add a few seconds to the response time of a program or application, which is a small price to pay for a faster and more responsive machine, in reality the programs and applications are probably starting faster because they don't have to wait for system resources that are being hogged by unneccesary applications that are running in the back ground. OK enough of my rant about software writers. Considering the number of "04's" you have and that list of fifty app's I suggest you go back to "msconfig" and click "disable all" then re-enable the following three: avgcc (AVG antivirus) avgemc (AVG antivirus) updReg (windows automatic update) Do this first and lets see how much your machine improves. How often do you use the all in one and the webcam? |

updreg is not Windows update - it's Creative. Not needed.
How's it running now? In a nutshell, you don't need any of that stuff in the startup - when you want to use something, you manually start it. Last edited by glc; 05-20-2005 at 01:36 PM. |
